Heavenly Couture: The Met Gala's Holy theme for 2018

For many, Vogue Magazine is a fashion bible so it seems only fitting that The Metropolitan Museum of Art's next big Costume Institute exhibit is titled, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination."  While it may seem controversial for The Met to take on Catholicism, the theme has more to do with fashion design's interpretation of religion and its use of religious iconography within the world of style and couture.

Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, who has worked closely with the Vatican on the exhibit had this to say about it: "The focus is on a shared hypothesis about what we call the Catholic imagination and the way it has engaged artists and designers and shaped their approach to creativity, as opposed to any kind of theology or sociology. Beauty has often been a bridge between believers and unbelievers.”

Mr. Bolton traveled to Rome eight times before the Vatican "signed off" on the exhibit. The Sistine Chapel sacristy Office for the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff gave the "blessing" for this show to occur. They were receptive to the idea from the start but needed to be cautious and respectful of the Vatican garments that would be on loan to The Met, especially since some of the pieces are still in use by the Pope.

Along with Anna Wintour, Mr. and Mrs. Schwarzman, Donatella Versace, Amal Clooney and Rihanna will be the honorary chairs opening night of the Met Gala.

Our Favorite Winter Coats

winter coats

As we move into November, for many, the cool breeze that accompanies autumn will start to have a crisp bite. As winter sets in and temperatures drop it’s going to be time to wrap yourself up in something warm. If you don’t already have one, the first thing on your shopping list should be a stylish yet warm coat that is going to keep winter chills at bay.

There are occasions where you want to have a coat that you can open up and have layers to add texture and depth while still keeping you warm. But equally there will be days this winter, you want to zip or button up and keep the bitter cold at away. We’ve shared our favorites at doing both. Here are some of the winter coats trending this winter.

stella mccartney parka

PARKA

The parka coat has been in trend for the last few winters.

It can be retro or modern, and it’s definitely practical. It's a casual coat that sits well with jeans and boots.

The parka has variations, with vibrant and daring colors available, like an apt Autumn orange or electric blue, making it a statement coat, or of course, you may choose the more classic neutral colors like black, navy or tan, making the parka pretty versatile.

BURBERRY trench

TRENCH

Very on-trend right now, and perhaps a coat to complement the parka is the trench coat. Having one of each is in your closet will have you covered for most occasions, literally .

The trench coat is great for making casual a little more elegant, but often works as a suitable coat for more formal occasions too. It doesn’t offer as much protection against the elements as a parka would so you need to consider wearing layers. With that said, the trench coat offers a lot of versatility, a good look open or closed with floor length and knee-length options to choose from.

duffle coat men

DUFFLE

A dark horse this Autumn and seeming to stay on trend as we move into winter, the Duffle coat works really well with a pair of skinny jeans or cords making it perfect for casual dressing, especially when accessorized with the right scarf.

Most people love the classic burgundy red, navy
and black but similar to parkas, having a brighter color duffle to contrast the rest of your outfit has a lot of stylish fans loving this option.

pea coat mens

PEA COAT

Continuing to be popular is the Pea Coat.

It’s a very cosmopolitan look, often coupled with a knitted sweater and scarf for both style and extra warmth.

Having a fur color is a new flavor to the look, offering a little more detail, an extra texture and some extra warmth to boot. A perfect coat for milder days, or with the right layers, for winter and evenings.

SHEARLING COAT

SHEARLING

Finally, probably one of the hottest and newer trends for coats right now is the shearing coat - it is everywhere.

We love layers and textures, but what’s great about the shearling, it’s not an overwhelming, bulky coat, like a parka is, but because of its lining, it’s as warm, if not warmer. At the same time, it’s suede-like exterior makes it a coat to fit many styles and needs.

Shearling coats can be dressed up or down. They are so hot right now, a must-have. There are an abundance of designer styles and choices available, so you can really explore the look for a great shearling coat that fits your personal style.

Dior Homme 2018 Sunglasses

Dior Homme releases a new collection of men’s sunglasses that is prepared to stand the test of time. The glasses pair well with the designer, Kris Van Assche’s menswear Collection, extracting from the past to make it relevant to a new generation. The suit dressing combined with the experimentation of streetwear creates a freedom to accessorize.

The selection of metal sunglasses come in different styles:

DiorPressure has an ultra-thin metal frame with a reinterpreted aviator look. DiorTensity is timeless by design. Its square-shaped frame is complemented with a thin Havana acetate that is cut half-framed. DiorMaster is the most dramatic with thick frames contrasting its slim temples. All the sunglasses feature the signature rectangle emblem. Once again, Dior has created a collection that is edgy and fearless.

Fashion Trends We Need To Leave In 2017

Some fashion trends aren’t around for very long, and there is often a very good reason for that! After all, flares and platform boots wasn’t really a good look, no matter how much we tell ourselves that it was. Thankfully, they have been left well behind in the 1970s! Similarly, all the huge bouffants of the 1980s didn’t see the light of day ones the 1990s started.

It’s almost the new year, so we will soon see which trends and styles of 2017 will survive and live onto 2018. There will be a few that will survive, but it’s fair to say a few deserve to be left behind in this year for good. Here are some that haven’t impressed us at all.

Formal Crop Tops

Crop tops became pretty big this year, and there’s nothing wrong with them up to a point. However, we noticed that a few celebrities and A-listers began to wear crop tops as part of their formal wear. Ok, so crop tops are perfectly fine in a casual situation but please let’s stop this formal crop top malarkey. Formal dresses need to be elegant and sophisticated. And that is no excuse to get your belly out, no matter how posh you might think it is!

Mom Jeans

We can understand why mom jeans became so big with everyone - they are super comfortable! Of course, there is nothing wrong with cozy clothes. In fact, we agree that there aren’t nearly enough clothes that are comfortable these days. But why should comfortable clothes be so frumpy? These mom jeans took it one step too far and made a lot of glamorous girls look frumpy for no reason!

Cut-Out Shoulders

Have you noticed that a lot of tops this year had no shoulders in them? These cut-out shoulder tops were big news in 2017. In actual fact, they were so popular, it became tricky trying to find any tops with long sleeves that still had their shoulders in tact! We’ve got our fingers crossed that shoulders make a comeback next year.

Plastic Shoes

We’re certainly not fans of blisters, so we are still scratching our heads and trying to figure out why plastic shoes caught on this year. It’s probably because some really big names, such as Kim Kardashian, were photographed wearing them. But not only would these plastic shoes cause some major blisters, they are very expensive for shoes that look very cheap!

Unicorns

Every year, there seems to be an animal that is very popular in the fashion world and designers cover their clothes in it. We’ve already had clothes patterns that feature owls and foxes. Well, in 2017, things certainly took a turn for the more fantastical as unicorns took over. We’re hoping that we have already passed peak unicorn. We’ve spotted unicorn shoes, unicorn handbags, and unicorn-covered jumpers. That’s enough unicorn for now, thanks!

Do you agree that these trends need to stay in 2017? Let us know which ones you think should be forgotten!

Dreamy ERDEM Florals now at H&M

"I was determined that Erdem x H&M would be the most beautiful collection, of the most amazing materials, details, and finishes," says designer Erdem Moralioglu. "I wanted this to be a collection that was truly focused on the pieces, to make something timeless in such a transient age."

In July 2017, H&M announced that British brand Erdem would be next in line of high-end collaborators to partner with the fast-fashion retailer. Details surrounding the partnership were kept secret, revealing only that florals and lace will be staples in the collection as they are within Erdem's DNA. It was also revealed of an additional collaboration with famed filmmaker Baz Luhrmann who  would be creating a mini-movie about the Erdem X H&M collection.

The Erdem collection hit H&M stores worldwide on Nov. 2nd with 83 pieces of womenswear, menswear, accessories and shoes. Erdem pointed out that the women in his life - mother, sister, were the inspiration for this collection. Prices range from $29.99 - $299.00 As promised, dreamy and elegant florals have blossomed throughout most of the pieces, including florals on the shoes. Also, expect to see tailored coats, chic handbags and something quite new for Erdem that is sure to be a huge hit with the H&M customer, the hoodie.

Baz Luhrmann has set the tone of the Erdem X H&M collaborative collection with an ethereal short film that tells a youthful story of romance, mystery and a love triangle. The film, titled, “The Secret Life of Flowers” features the Erdem collection in a visually captivating set.

“I wanted the film to be like a whole movie. It’s a very modern love story, set in a country house that is full of its own secrets and it’s like a metaphor for our times - it’s harsh out there in the world, but in here, the things that really matter keep growing in an eternal spring,” says Baz Luhrmann.
