Heron Preston FW20: We’re living in strange times, between hope and despair. We are questioning our consciousness, core beliefs and ideas and asking ourselves: ‘What the fuck are we doing?’

It’s too easy to put up with what’s damaging – it’s time to use our ingenuity to create a better world and a healthy environment.

The phrase It’s All Good, It’s All Fucked, is taken from Juliana Spahr’s critically acclaimed book, That Winter The Wolf Came, described as ‘a revelation of the possibilities for resistance in the present’.

“Look at the world as the largest construction zone that we've ever witnessed, it's like a work in progress,” says Preston. “It’s this idea of picking apart and putting it back together in better ways with new solutions, innovations and new technologies. Using your brain to imagine a better world and then designing that into reality.”

The fashion industry is one such place where entrenched systems and narratives are being challenged. It’s where we can begin. Workwear, a passion of Heron Preston for its integrity and sense of purpose, is worn by doers. It is the most authentic form of streetwear, seen everywhere from the mail-carrier to the sanitation department worker.

FW20 includes recycled nylons, thermo-sealed GORE-TEX suiting, guaranteed waterproof and breatheable; cordura puffers; functional pockets on dressed-up tailoring and waterproof zipper details. Waffled denim is inspired by Japanese construction worker outfits and wool felt has a touch-reactive membrane. Women’s footwear features a spirit-level heel. Informed choices are our intention going forward, with HPC navigating certified materials and practices through constantly improving traceability. Preston’s collection in-a- collection, Uniform, is additionally a dedicated space for research, experimentation and development around sustainability.

I hope this note finds you safe and well. As you may know, last June I began a dream that I’ve long had: to launch my very own runway show, CR Runway.

We would like to use our runway to create a platform to benefit research on and the fight against COVID-19. This year’s CR Runway will be entirely digital. CR Runway with amfAR Against COVID-19 will debut online on Friday, May 1 as the world’s first fashion show of its kind. With safety as our foremost concern, CR Runway with amfAR Against COVID-19 will be created remotely from all around the world. My team and I will collaborate directly with each talent on everything from fashion to hair, makeup, nails, and choreography direction so that every model can film herself “walking” from the comfort of her own home. These videos will be edited together to form a complete digital runway show which will be streamed on Friday, May 1.

In these times of uncertainty, our support for one another has never been so crucial. We must do what we can to help—not only in material efforts but also with our platforms and through our actions. I’ve always believed in the power of inspiration — it’s one of the founding reasons behind CR Fashion Book— and I know that we can use the runway to really make a difference. For his FW 2020 womenswear collection, Virgil Abloh further develops Off-White’s codes with a sense of contemporary realism, beyond the hems of the fashion industry. He looks at the world at large.

To set the pace, Abloh ventured back to the nineties—a definitive sartorial era—by compiling references from then-ubiquitous minimal slip-dresses and bra tops to Hype Williams’s 1998 directorial film debut, Belly. Williams is widely known for his innovative and Zeitgeist-capturing music videos, which blend technology, fashion, and uncompromising individuality; in Belly, keystone late nineties-era hallmarks like red leather Ecko puffers and original-design all-white Range Rovers take centerstage. The view towards a more recent nostalgia hints at a collective comfort regarding what has passed—especially when the future feels so unpredictable.

From there, Abloh used the nineties as a springboard for helping to define what OffWhite will be in the 2020’s. His approach is one of calculated miscellany, mirroring the moment and pushing that moment forward.

Bookending his Fall runway were hybridized, high-volume dresses with Arc’teryx parkas. Myriad trenches came paired with trousers, which were generally long and lean, with breaks at the ankle. Holstein blot motifs walked alongside circular cutout separates; heavy chain elements were worked in as jewelry or dress adornments. Extra-tailored leather blazers featured spray-painted overlays. Houndstooth patterns morphed into psychedelic pools on top-coats and skirts. An angular tulle wing-and-half-dress was worn over camouflage cargo pants. A collaboration with MGM studios led to a Blue Velvet-inspired capsule: a structured, off-the-shoulder dress in the fabric the movie is named for, along with mirror-ball metallic garments that channel Dorothy Vallens’s glitzier ensembles.

Akin to what’s happening in culture greater, we are now living in an era of openness, constant newness, hyper-information, and the pressing need for adaptability: “Reality,” says Abloh, “is the starting point of my type of storytelling.”

Craftsmanship is an exchange between cultures, across space and time; with the knowledge of materials and processes merging heritage, individual sensitivities and the new.

An awareness and a freedom are at the center of Lucie and Luke Meier’s practice at Jil Sander since they began. It is the basis of their own redefinition of the hand-made. The sartorial and the ancestral coexist. The austerity that runs through the collection is constantly charged and undone.
