Heron Preston FW20 Menswear

Heron Preston FW20: We’re living in strange times, between hope and despair. We are questioning our consciousness, core beliefs and ideas and asking ourselves: ‘What the fuck are we doing?’

It’s too easy to put up with what’s damaging – it’s time to use our ingenuity to create a better world and a healthy environment.

The phrase It’s All Good, It’s All Fucked, is taken from Juliana Spahr’s critically acclaimed book, That Winter The Wolf Came, described as ‘a revelation of the possibilities for resistance in the present’.

“Look at the world as the largest construction zone that we've ever witnessed, it's like a work in progress,” says Preston. “It’s this idea of picking apart and putting it back together in better ways with new solutions, innovations and new technologies. Using your brain to imagine a better world and then designing that into reality.”

The fashion industry is one such place where entrenched systems and narratives are being challenged. It’s where we can begin. Workwear, a passion of Heron Preston for its integrity and sense of purpose, is worn by doers. It is the most authentic form of streetwear, seen everywhere from the mail-carrier to the sanitation department worker.

FW20 includes recycled nylons, thermo-sealed GORE-TEX suiting, guaranteed waterproof and breatheable; cordura puffers; functional pockets on dressed-up tailoring and waterproof zipper details. Waffled denim is inspired by Japanese construction worker outfits and wool felt has a touch-reactive membrane. Women’s footwear features a spirit-level heel. Informed choices are our intention going forward, with HPC navigating certified materials and practices through constantly improving traceability. Preston’s collection in-a- collection, Uniform, is additionally a dedicated space for research, experimentation and development around sustainability.

Heron Preston Fall 2018 Menswear

Designer Heron Preston showed his third womenswear and menswear collection for his eponymous brand, titled “Public Figure,” an aesthetic riff on influencer culture and self-declared celebrity.

For inspiration, Preston decided to play with observations of his surroundings on the “influencer jet stream,” a term for the highly attended cultural churn of annual events, from Art Basel in Miami to global fashion weeks (one can find a list of such events printed on a shirt in the collection under a sparkling crystal globe).

In our current culture, “Public Figure” is a title one can select for oneself on Instagram, and the patterns and proclamations of these “Public Figures” are present in the details of Preston’s Fall/Winter 2018 collection.

Graphics in the new collection bestow pseudo-titles like “Influencer” and “Public Figure”, a playful take on the intensely curated self-display that we see en masse on social media, meant to be worn and made visible in meta-context.

The labels appear across the front of camouflage pants—with a new take on the print that focuses on leaves with rich colors—as well as on denim jackets and polos. “If you buy a polo from Heron Preston you are an influencer,” the designer jokes. “Who is to argue that?”

For this season, Preston merges his covetable workwear aesthetic with new luxury materials, introducing a range of new accessories, including handbags, footwear, and eyewear. The first Heron Preston handbag, The Canal Bag, is a dual flap shoulder bag with snakeskin and calf-hair, designed with two pockets and a bright orange Heron Preston branded strap and complemented by the brand’s eye-catching orange pull tab with “Pull” instruction playfully printed on it. A construction inspired thick sole boot comes in snakeskin, black and camouflage printed leather, with the “Style” logo printed in red. The collection also introduces sunglasses, with tortoiseshell and rose, black, and red and orange colorways with branding on the frame, inspired by glasses Preston was gifted (as an influencer, naturally) and wore himself. All branding, from the silver embossed Made In Italy to the signature orange label and serial numbers appear on the outside of accessories in the collection.

Womenswear offerings continue to evolve in this collection, which includes a snakeskin leather dress, crushed velvet bodysuits, and for the first time, women’s suiting, with a two-tone oversize blazer and skirt. Preston also worked with luxury shearling and faux fur for the first time, letting elevated materials have a playful dialogue with his workwear influence.  A crystal application of the “СТИЛЬ” logo updates Preston’s signature for Fall/Winter 2018.

Fall/Winter 2018 also marks the debut of Heron Preston’s NASA collection, an idea the designer teased in December 2013 when he appeared in a Styles Section piece in the New York Times under the headline, The Street Wear Designer Heron Preston Has His Eyes on NASA. This season, which coincides with the space agency’s 60th anniversary, Preston’s self-declared dream collaboration will be a reality.

The Heron Preston NASA capsule is a NASA-inspired collection that taps on the agency’s authentic 1975 logo, which consists of the word "NASA" in a unique type style, nicknamed the "worm." The NASA “worm” logo, originally discontinued in 1992, is resurrected with Preston’s FW18 collection.

Inspired by the outer layer of Extravehicular Mobility Units, or spacesuits, Preston interprets the iconic uniform in the form of a 3M nylon space jacket, a silver denim logo jacket, and a multifunctional convertible backpack (which can also be worn as a fanny pack or tote bag). The collection is branded with “fall/winter 1990” as an homage to the former logo.

Rounding off the Fall/Winter 2018 collection, Heron Preston introduces a new collaboration with Carhartt WIP. Early in his career, Preston re-worked and styled vintage Carhartt WIP jackets for his website, and the brand’s iconic canvas workwear remains essential to the Heron Preston DNA. This new collection will combine the classic canvas with Preston’s crystal “СТИЛЬ” logo, a high fashion stamp on utilitarian garments.

The collaboration includes a fanny pack, beanie, jacket, vest and pants, all treated and paint splattered for a deep wear look, and accented with Heron Preston’s signature orange trim. The treatment marks Preston’s reverence to workwear as functional protective layers, capturing a moment in the clothing’s life that makes it striking.

HERON PRESTON DEBUTS “SHOW HOUSE” COLLECTION FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2018 AT PARIS MEN’S FASHION WEEK

For Heron Preston’s second collection, the designer developed pieces with subversive humor. Taking the second step into building his unique point-of-view, Preston dipped into his personal history to create a graphic heavy, referential collection inspired by kitsch, from artworks like Jeff Koons’ ceramic sculptures to the designer’s own memories of paintings in display homes in the Northern California suburbs. This season also marks the debut of Heron Preston womenswear, presented alongside the men’s collection.

“Show House” is named for pristine model homes in suburban subdivisions, the staged living spaces with eerie perfection, teeming with non-life, designed to imagine a mini-utopian future. Memories of walking through a show house when his parents moved to the suburbs of San Francisco inspired the graphics in this collection, like an image of a bowl of fruit (wittily branded with the word “fruit” on the back) as well as the setting for the lookbook, shot outside Milan in a vacant space meant to evoke the empty lots of a subdivision-in-progress.

Preston’s research also led him to the origins of his work as a designer, modeling one piece after a display tee used for years at Jonathan Embroidery Plus on 38th Street in Manhattan, meant to show the various screen printing techniques the store offered. Preston borrowed graphics from the display shirt, from an exploding baseball to a rattlesnake, a playful homage to nonsense-as-aesthetic.

The Heron Preston Spring/Summer 2018 collection also includes new painting graphics that feature the Heron bird, borrowed from John James Audubon’s depictions, as well as the brand’s hallmark “Style” embroidery, printed in Russian. Utility wear remains a major influence for the brand, with cargo and workwear elements present in both the men’s and women’s collection.

For womenswear, Preston focused on leather elements and cropped silhouettes balanced with oversize tees and hoodies, along with a new rollout of small leather accessories.

HERON PRESTON ANNOUNCES GLOBAL RETAIL TOUR FOR HIS DEBUT AW17 COLLECTION
The Designer’s First Full Collection Will Begin Landing In-Stores Globally On May 20, 2017. Preston Will Move Across Cities To Celebrate The Collection With A Series Of In-Store Events, The First Of Which Will Take Place In Moscow On May 19, 2017.

Heron Preston, the innovative creator whose fashion collaboration with the Department of Sanitation made headlines during New York Fashion Week in September, will celebrate the global launch of his first full collection for his eponymous line with a series of events in key cities including Tokyo, Milan, Seoul, New York, Paris, London, and Moscow – the Russian capital will serve as the launching point for Preston's retail tour with a pop-up store at iconic concept store KM20 that will open on May 19, 2017.

Preston will travel across the globe to Russia to set up a pop-up space in collaboration with KM20 concept store to mark the initial drop of the highly anticipated debut collection from the New York-based designer's AW17 season. The collection, titled For You, The World offers a cohesive narrative, tying in ideas, graphics and inspiration that Preston has explored in capsule collections and exclusive releases over the years.

The Heron Preston KM20 pop-up will run for three days starting on Friday, May 19, 2017; on day one of the pop-up Olga Karput, KM20’s founder will host an event with Preston to earmark the opening of the pop-up. Preston's pop-up at KM20 will showcase a number of Heron Preston x DSNY items presented during NYFW in September 2017 alongside the main AW17 collection and a limited edition graphic tee created for the retail tour partners exclusively for sale at these limited pop-up installations.

Preston, who functions as an artist and creative director in addition to his work as a designer, has designed a unique pop-up installation incorporating video and art installations, metal mechanical arms and heavy-duty machinery. The launch event on May 19th in Moscow at KM20 will feature music by Virgil Abloh and DJ CYBER69 and take place in the parking garage directly underneath the Maison in the city center, the future location of KM20, 2 Stoleshnikov street. KM20 plans to move into the space permanently this coming fall. The new location will allow for a large-scale expansion for KM20 with a square footage multiplying a little more than five times than that of its current location.

Preston selected Moscow as the starting point for this retail tour as Russia has been a source of inspiration for the designer his love of the Cyrillic alphabet is what led Preston to incorporate the iconic Стиль embroidery element seen throughout his designs.

“In 2014 Nick Knight was curating a 'hip-hop in the 80’s' photo exhibition in his SHOWstudio gallery and invited me to create a t-shirt for that project. For the direction, I decided to focus on hip hop culture's obsession with style and branding. I designed a metal tee and wrote “STYLE” in Russian because I loved the style of letters in the Cyrillic alphabet. What started out as a single idea crossed over into more of my work over the years and eventually became my sub- logo. For the launch of my first collection, I felt an American designer debuting in Russia would be different from what everyone else in the industry is doing while staying authentic to the story of my brand. I'm excited to connect with the place that inspired my logo and share my culture with Russian youth.” – Heron Preston on his iconic Стиль turtleneck

The Heron Preston pop-up space at the KM20 underground parking garage will be open from May 19th to May 21st at 2 Stoleshnikov street.

HERON PRESTON AW17 - FOR YOU, THE WORLD

HERON PRESTON MAKES READY-TO-WEAR DEBUT AT PARIS MEN’S FASHION WEEK

The designer’s first full collection creates a personal narrative for the brand’s workwear aesthetic and namesake identity.

Heron Preston, the innovative creator whose fashion collaboration with the Department of Sanitation made headlines during New York Fashion Week in September, debuted the first full collection for his eponymous line during Paris Men’s Fashion Week. The collection, titled For You, The World offers a cohesive narrative, tying in ideas, graphics and inspiration that Preston has explored in capsule collections and exclusive releases over the years.

His inspiration for For You, The World began with his personal history making and wearing tees and hoodies, the DNA of his personal style, and the tension between luxury and street labels, fashion and workwear. The impetus for the collection began on a group text with Virgil Abloh, who encouraged Preston to turn his idea for a new cap he was considering for HPC, an art object online store developed and run by Preston, into concepting for a full collection to further develop his story.

This collection is the first time the designer has incorporated the meaning of his name into his clothes. Recalling a trip he took as a young child to the Marin headlands in California, the designer decided to explore the nature and aesthetic of herons and bring them into his designs. The color palette of heron birds, with their soft blues and bright orange mouths, can be seen especially on long sleeve tees that feature a painting of two herons that the designer commissioned for the collection. Down the sleeve of the shirt reads “A desire to establish as unique and independent,” a description of the spirit of the birds Preston read while researching the collection.

The Heron windbreaker was also inspired by the flash of color seen when the birds open their mouths to gulp fish. The collection focuses on labor uniform-inspired outerwear, including jackets in a woodland camo print, a bomber layered with a knit mock turtleneck, as well as a boxy leather jacket cut with the expertise of Italian suiting and styled with blue-and-red track pants. For his debut, Preston continued his exploration into graphic text and imagery on his clothes. The word “style” in Russian, which has become the sub-logo for the brand, can be seen on sleeves and collars throughout the collection. One tee reads COMMUNITY SERVICE, while another shirt features a motorcycle skull with blue flames adapted from a vintage garment in Preston’s personal wardrobe. All of the tags for the garments are placed on the outside: bright orange labels on the base of the left sleeve, and placed on pants at the upper thigh, an experimental placement that Preston began with his DSNY collection. Airbrushing details add an element of graphic handwork into the collection, with sprayed-on globes with the collection name printed on the backs of select pieces. Pants in the collection also draw from utility wear, particularly comfortable tailored sweats and track pants, as well as cold-weather shells for work pants and hiking pants.

The collection, styled with orange rubber gloves tucked into pants and bright orange band aids, also includes leather accessories, a wallet chain, fanny pack, belts, hats, and socks.

Underlying the messaging of the show is a commitment from the designer to transparently raise his eco-consciousness and challenge himself to be better for the planet and his community from collection to collection. The designer was moved by designer Eileen Fisher’s famous statement that the fashion and apparel industry is the second-largest polluting industry next to Big Oil. For You, The World is a romantic statement of intent, both aesthetically and consciously. Beginning by having all of his collection made by craftsmen in Italy from the finest Italian fabrics, for his debut Preston prioritized creating pieces that will truly last, with his eyes on improving and pioneering a better industry standard for the near future.

In addition to these new pieces, the collection for Autumn-Winter 2017 includes cut and sew pieces from Heron Preston x DSNY, the designer’s sold out collaboration with the New York City Department of Sanitation. These pieces, which include two new colorways for the DSNY logo long sleeve tee as well as a new baseball cap and two additional bag styles, will be sold at retail as a limited edition part of the collection.
