Thespian Couture on Project Runway All Stars

project-runway-all-stars-recap-broadway-fashionado

The All Stars took to the stage in last week's challenge. They were to create a costume for a character who played a flamboyant rich woman [who likes to flaunt her wealth] in the play

Godspell

. This was truly a challenge for the designers since costume design lives in a different world than fashion design. None of them really delivered "costume." Nonetheless, there was still a winner and one designer was out. Broadway star,

Sutton Foster,

guest judged. The winner's prize was that their dress would be featured and worn in

Godspell

and their bio would appear in the show's program.

kenley-collins-project-runway-all-stars-recap-broadway-fashionado

Kenley Collins

was "safe." The judges weren't crazy about her look but loved the jacket, noting its fine execution. In the workroom, mentor [and Marie Claire editor]

Joanna Coles

noticed the absence of polka dots in Kenley's design and made a comment about it which slightly ruffled Kenley's feathers. It was clear that tension in the workroom is beginning to become more prevalent.

micahel-costello-project-runway-all-stars-recap-broadway-fashionado

Michael Costello's

dress got a good amount of praise, especially his color palette and the feathered head piece. Unfortunately, his look was more runway ready than Broadway costume-worthy. He should have over-accessorized to play up the flamboyancy of the

Godspell

character, though it still wouldn't have gotten him the win. I

do

think he'll end up in the top three.

austin-scarlett-project-runway-all-stars-recap-broadway-fashionado

A slip of the tongue had

Isaac Mizrahi

saying

Austin

"

Starlet

" rather than

Scarlett

. He was quickly corrected by the designer. I wonder how accidental that truly was? Its sure fitting! The judges liked Austin's look and styling.

mila-project-runway-all-stars-recap-broadway-fashionado

Ah, and then we have

Mila's

hooker couture. I don't know what went wrong here except that Mila must have really felt out of her element [and comfort zone]. She is a modern, almost minimalist designer who tried to create an extravagant, theatrical costume. Didn't work. Sadly, the white faux fur coat screamed street walker and the asymmetrical skirt was unflattering. No surprise that she was in the bottom two.

kara-project-runway-all-stars-recap-broadway-fashionado

Kara Janx

. Sweet, emotional, overly-sensitive Kara went bye bye. She actually has never bothered me. I found her stories/explanations amusing and at times insightful. BUT it was her time to go. She missed the mark , again with fit issues and questionable taste. Kara, darling, and what's with that enormous bow??

mondo-project-runway-all-stars-recap-broadway-fashionado

I have a feeling we're going to see more and more wins from

Mondo

in the remaining episodes and I'm just fine with that. He stands an excellent chance for the well-deserved grand prize.

Like you, I have no idea what any of the upcoming challenges are going to be. We'll have to wait week to week for that 30 second preview. I am hoping that as the show draws closer to an end, the thematic challenges become fewer and that the designers get to create garments that reveal more about their design aesthetic. Let's see who they really are as designers!

FashionMania Project Runway All Stars Face Off!

project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

The All Stars "faced-off" on the runway in last week's episode with special guest judge

Cynthia Rowley

. They were paired off by the seasons of the year and competed against one another over the hottest looks for spring, summer, fall and winter... Sadly, in some cases, more luke warm rather than hot.

kenley-mondo-project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

Kenley & Mondo.

Kenley's "summer" look was cute, cute, cute - the judges agreed and liked it way better than Mondo's. Isaac especially like that it was a one piece and that the fit was right. Georgina pointed out that the dots didn't line up at the seams. Cynthia Rowley didn't get Mondo's look at all. I was a little surprised that she couldn't think outside of the box.

austin-scarlett-kara-project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

Austin & Kara.

The reinvented khaki wowed the judges but they hated the blouse. Me too! Really, Austin, a "spring" look featuring florals... how original. The judges are questioning Austin's sense of (or lack of) style. Kara's look was too simple. The judges didn't love it either. My question for Kara: where are the accessories???

mila-rami-project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

Mila & Rami.

I'm a Mila fan. Cynthia liked the "geometry" of her "fall" look though Georgina observed that if you're going to create Helmet Lang style pants, the fit really needs to be tight and less timid. I get it. Isaac hated Rami's color choices but all the judges loved the cut of the blue coat. Unfortunately, that love didn't save Rami who got sent home.

michael-costello-jerell-project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

Jerell & Michael.

Project Runway wouldn't be "reality" tv without a little controversy. You copied me! No I didn't! Jerell accused Michael of knocking off his "winter" jacket... whatever, who cares... At the end of the day, Jerell was the overall winner. Congratulations. Get over it.

The Fastest & Tastiest Project Runway All Stars

project-runway-all-stars-diane-von-furstenberg-isaac-mizrahi-fashionado

"This challenge has nothing to do with being a talented designer but a fast seamstress," said

Anthony Williams.

The All Stars tackled the fastest challenge in Project Runway history when the iconic

Diane von Furstenberg

delivered the 6 hour project. The designers were treated to "tasty" gelato but the catch was to make an outfit that was inspired by their chosen flavor. They were given only six hours to complete the challenge - holy stitches!! The winning design will be worn by model and guest judge

Miranda Kerr

to an industry party.

rami-project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

It's a good thing that

Rami

distracted viewers by showing off his bulging muscles by wearing a tank top in the workroom. Thank goodness because his dress wasn't all that.

mila-project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

I like

Mila

. Her designs are chic and modern. I feel she is underrated on the show and it was great to see Mila get some air time.

Isaac Mizrahi

(and I) really liked her dress inspired by the gelato flavor: milk and sour cherries. Anthony referred to Mila's dress as a "color blocked Christmas ornament disaster." Okay, that's funny. I laughed BUT disagreed. Come on Mila, show us what you've got!

april-johnston-project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

Diane von Furstenberg

called

April Johnston's

dress a "Halloween spider thing" and

Georgina Chapman

felt that April needs more confidence as a designer. I know I haven't been very kind to April but since I can't stand to see people cry and April was visibly upset as she got sent home, I'll play nice. She's 22 and has already accomplished a great deal. My parting advice: get happy; embrace color.

mondo-project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

Mondo

was so close to winning this challenge I bet he could taste the cantaloupe! I loved this caftan and so did the judges, even though Isaac criticized the orange color. DVF was quick to put him in his place seeing that he was wearing orange himself!

michael-costello-project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

Michael Costello

takes the win for a second time in a row!

It's Bacon Couture at Project Runway All Stars with Miss Piggy

missy-piggy-project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

With her unique blend of sass, style and charm,

Miss Piggy

hammed it up for the

Project Runway All Stars

.

Their challenge:

to design a flamboyant cocktail dress for the glamorous muppet. Hey and check out the heels on those hooves! Loubs?

project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

I'm happy to say that the workroom was uneventful in this episode as the drama was at a minimum. The designers played well together and I enjoyed watching the social scenes at the penthouse.

April

redeemed herself a little bit, in my eyes, with this frock, but again, has resorted to using all black. Though she wasn't alone in her color choice as

Anthony

and

Mila

also created black dresses. Maybe they were thinking blackened Piggy?? They weren't in the top or bottom, just safe.

project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

Rami

gave us a festive, ruffled, polka-dotted, Isla Bonita'

ish

frock.

project-runway-all-stars-austin-scarlett-fashionado

Austin Scarlett

was a #fail with this over-sized, over-bowed dress. If

Heidi Klum

were judging, I know she would have pointed out that she's seen this (style) dress every season.

Yawn!

On a personal note, I have to ponder what Austin was thinking in his get up? Was he channeling

Zorro: The Gay Blade

? Ridiculous.

project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

Kenley stood a good chance of winning with this pinky-piggylicious giraffe printed dress.

project-runway-all-stars-fashionado

Joanna Coles warned Gordana that her dress was reading like a "nightgown." Coles' concerns were spot on and Gordana was sent home.

project-runway-all-stars-michael-costello-fashionado

And this little piggy took the prize. It's

Michael Costello's

cocktail creation for Miss Piggy that won the judges over...

project-runway-all-stars-michael-costello-fashionado

Victory!

Tune Thursday at 9pm for episode 4 on Lifetime TV.
