On March 14, 2020 the Art Institute of Atlanta made fashion history with their extraordinary, student-driven production which even made national headlines via E! News and Essence.com. The newsworthy event boasted a celeb-filled front row to include Eva Marcille, Angelica Ross, Dyllon Burnside, Terri J. Vaughn and Jamal Sims, who directed the show that provided the talented students of the Art Institute of Atlanta the experience of a real-world, first-class production. Students, faculty and administrators across all disciplines worked together in unison to produce the multi-media extravaganza: fashion design, photography, video & audio production, culinary arts, graphic design and interior design.

Sixteen fashion design students participated in the juried fashion premiere. They showcased capsule collections in menswear and ready-to-wear featuring a wide variety of genres, from eveningwear to gender-fluid fashion. It was evidently clear that the future of fashion is alive and thriving at the Art Institute of Atlanta. For added educational value and impact, the young designers were paired with professional fashion designers months before the runway show. The mentorship guided students to success while offering real-world working situations that included multiple fittings with professional models, critiques, garment mockups and working alongside industry professionals on all levels of production.

Visually, the fashion show was dynamic, from the set to the clothes to the choreography of the models. The set was designed and built by Carlton Lee Studios and featured two jumbo screens and a custom neon lit runway within the open air lower deck of the parking lot - think The Fast & The Furious, Tokyo Drift. To drive home the theme (no pun intended) Lexus sponsored the event with car placement - on the runway itself! The Lexus LC 500 and Lexus RCF Track Edition were positioned front and center becoming a focal point and anchoring the runway. Jamal Sims (Aladdin movie choreographer) directed the show to perfection. The culmination of movement, set design, hair and make up by Paul Mitchell Schools and of course, the fashion, made for a spectacular presentation.

Lastly but most certainly not least, Octavius Terry, the man behind the vision and the Art Institute of Atlanta’s Fashion Coordinator said this was a “dream come true.” Terry, who is a menswear designer, joined the Art Institute nearly two years ago and from the beginning talked about bringing together all departments for an all-inclusive, collaborative production that, under faculty guidance, would be 100% student driven and produced. His dream was realized and more.

Octavius Terry debuted his FW 20/21 menswear collection titled “Octavius Marison.” The fourteen look collection offered an elevated interpretation of streetwear meets sartorial elegance. “The mix of modern living and antiquated living (near the Wall of China)” was an inspiration said Terry. “Kill Bill came to mind because it is all about the underdog rising and that’s what I felt about our school, faculty, students and also myself.” The collection was rich in color and pattern. It was edgy yet wearable. An obsession-worthy key element to the collection were the various ponchos with bold zipper hardware. A definite must-have.

And just as we thought things couldn’t get bigger or better, the grand finale came with a Proclamation for Octavius Terry presented by Councilman Antonio Brown - an emotional highlight of the evening.

History was made at the Art Institute of Atlanta. On all levels.

A limited stock of 10 of each color will be available at 10 selected stockists worldwide for a limited period.

The coats will be available from August at Dries Van Noten stores in Antwerp, Paris and Tokyo as well as in selected stockists in New York (Barneys), London (Harvey Nichols), Moscow (Le Form), Tokyo (Isetan, Shinjuku), Hong Kong (Lane Crawford), Singapore (Club 21) and online on Mr Porter.

Tradition embraces technology as this is the first known time this time honored technique of marbling, usually reserved for application on paper for book linings as example, is used for textiles and clothing. The Ebru technique creates motifs when oil based inks diffuse on a water surface and transferred to paper.

It took some time for the Dries Van Noten design team to find a master artist of this technique willing to help impart his knowledge and assist in taking on the challenge of transferring the technique to textiles. Three hundred unique works were created after days spent at his London Atelier.  The idea for the finale of the fashion show, a cacophony of all of all the vivid and vibrant marble prints together was born when all of three hundred marbling samples lay alongside each other on the atelier floor.

GREATS BRAND DROPS TWO NEW WOOSTER X LARDINI STYLES FOR SS17 CAPSULE

When menswear icon Nick Wooster gets involved in designing, you know you're going to get something unique. As an industry leader having held roles at Ralph Lauren, Bergdorf Goodman, and holding a place on the Business of Fashion's “100 Most Influential People in the World,” and Vanity Fair's best dressed list, Nick Wooster is a fashion visionary. As the originator of the "mismatched sneaker" movement, Nick has influenced the market by not having to match a pair, which has been copied by multiple brands but there is only one originator.

For the fifth capsule of the Greats + Wooster + Lardini Spring/Summer 2017 collaboration, Nick selected a mismatched navy and white premium canvas with a smooth leather lining. Along with a second silhouette that is constructed from a durable grey canvas decorated with silver 3M polka dots that subtly reflect the light. Each style sits atop an elevated Margom outsole, adding a bit more height than Greats' traditional Margom sole. Greats + Wooster + Lardini branding can be found on tan calf lining, along with Greats' signature bar tack stitch in neon orange placed on the heel cup. The collection is hand crafted by Greats artisans in the Marche region of Italy.

The Greats + Wooster + Lardini Spring/Summer 2017 collaboration is now available for men and women exclusively on greats.com

alice + olivia x BASQUIAT CFDA Collection Launches

alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet is proud to announce that the late Neo-expressionist artist and frequent Andy Warhol collaborator Jean-Michel Basquiat has been selected, through the Basquiat Estate, as the partner for the second capsule collection that will help support the Council of Fashion Designers of America's efforts to promote young talent. The 17-piece collection will land in stores and online in November 2016. On November 2, 2016, Bendet will celebrate the capsule collection with an event in New York City at the Hole, a contemporary art gallery representing emerging artists in Lower Manhattan that champions the downtown artist community.

Jean-Michel Basquiat earned his recognition in the art world before the age of 27, even gaining the title of youngest artist to be given a solo show at the widely respected KestnerGesekkschaft gallery in Germany. His personal achievements and participation in an American art movement that ushered in a wave of young new artists make Basquiat the perfect next partner for the promotion of young artists within the fashion industry.

For the partnership with the CFDA alice + olivia works with a new artist to create a capsule collection that will be available for purchase at all alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet stores, aliceandolivia.com, and other retail partners with 50% of the proceeds from select items donated to the CFDA.

Stacey Bendet, CEO and Creative Director of alice + olivia, says “Jean-Michel Basquiat is one of my favorite artists. This partnership is exciting for me as it is very reflective of my brand and our continued collaboration with artists. It is also wonderful to be able to raise funds for the CFDA and support their ongoing initiative’s within our industry that develop new talent.”

The new collection includes a variety of unique apparel pieces, accessories and gifts that feature iconic elements of Basquiat’s art, such as the golden crown and colorful, street-art inspired design, mixed with alice + olivia’s whimsical and feminine touch. “Beat Bop” 1983, “Replicas” 1983, “Ascent” 1983, “In Italian” 1983, “Panel of Experts” 1982 and “Notary” 1983 are some of the artist’s famed works that Bendet cites as inspiration for the capsule collection.

Elements of these iconic works can be seen throughout the collection of apparel and accessories, which ranges in price from $150 - $1,295, and each item is reflective of a different piece of Basquiat’s works.  An array of textual references to Greek mythology, Roman history, and African Tribal culture from “Notary” can be found on the printed legging ($150), flare skirt ($395), and one of two printed gownskirts ($1,295). Nods to the hip hop and rap music that inspired Basquiat to create “Beat Bop” are seen in the fabric used for the slip dress ($350), one of two printed crop tops ($250) and Basquiat clutch ($495). The “Ascent” print used for the ruffel maxi dress ($1,195), second printed crop top ($250) and canvas weekender bag ($355) give a glimpse into Basquiat’s creative process – combining the sequencing of unconnected ideas with patterns of images and text from illustrated books. The “In Italian” print used for the printed shift dress ($395), a-line short skirt ($265) and second printed gown skirt ($1,295) highlights Basquiat’s interest in the use of language and multi media, tied in to themes of capitalism and monetary exchange. The pops of blue, red and yellow on the overlapping pattern button down ($350) are the perfect pairing to Basquiat’s “Replica”, one of the more muted prints used in the collection and a beautiful contrast to the hues in “Dos Cabezas” which can be seen on the large clutch ($295). The final pieces from the collection – hand painted moto jacket ($1,095), distressed patchwork jean ($595), and crown woven shirt ($395) – all utilize a combination of Basquiat prints and iconic symbols.  Bendet delivers a modern interpretation of Basquiat’s iconic artworks with the incorporation of beadwork and embroidery details which add a dimensional element to the iconic Basquiat works as they come to life in the form of dresses, tops, skirts, jackets, handbags, shoes, eyewear and more.

For the first CFDA capsule collection, debuted in April 2015, Bendet partnered with celebrated artist Domingo Zapata, a Spanish-American who has studios in New York, Miami, and Hollywood. Zapata’s pieces created for the partnership included a hand-painted ball gown, hand-painted full-length skirt, and custom two-piece skirt with a matching leather bustier featuring piping in a print painted by Zapata, all of which were auctioned off by Paddle8 with 100% of proceeds benefitting the CFDA.

Steven Kolb, CEO and Creative Director of the CFDA applauds the collaboration with alice + olivia; “Stacey Bendet has been a valued member of the CFDA for a long time” he says, “We could not be more appreciative for her work to help us in our cause to advance up-and-coming fashion designers. The extraordinary support we will be receiving from the brand thanks to this initiative is invaluable to our organization.”
