RUNWAY: Jeffrey Fashion Cares 2011

junya-watanabe-jeffrey-fashion-cares-atlanta-fashionado

An avant garde, future-esque, black leather, cape-like frock stomped down the catwalk. Then another and another and another... The overall impact of the gorgeous glamazon warriors on the

19th Annual Jeffrey Fashion Cares

runway dressed in all black was not only dramatic, but a statement, perhaps, that black is the new black.

Designs by Haider Ackerman, Rick Owens, Junya Watanabe, Lanvin, Prada and of course Jason Wu set the 2011 Jeffrey Fashion Cares 150ft runway on fire. [Many other designers were featured as well.]

Color gradually trickled unto the runway and electrifying splashes of orange, greens, yellows, fuchsias and reds made their high-end presence known.

Randi Layne

Don Purcell

do an excellent job of laying out a cohesive runway show that is interesting, exciting and entertaining. And if it seems effortless, its because

they're

good!

Special guest designer,

Jason Wu

, closed out the runway with about 10+ looks from his spectacular Fall 2011 Collection. "Baroque meets sportwear" as its been tagged, treated Atlantans to a sumptuous display of "deconstructed lace." Many of the garment had been painstakingly hand embellished. The end result - sparkling brilliance and sheer elegance.

Jeffrey Fashion Cares Announces Guest Designer

jason-wu-jeffrey-kalinsky-jeffrey-fashion-cares-2011-atlanta-fashionadoJason Wu. There you have it. This was too exciting and I couldn't hold it in!

This is Jason's second time coming down South for Jeffrey Fashion Cares and bringing his NYC sophistication to our city. Wu told JFC founder Jeffrey Kalinksy how much fun he had last time he was here and just how much he'd love to do it again... Well that was enough for Kalinsky to hear and an invitation to be the special guest designer at the 19th Annual Jeffrey Fashion Cares followed.

Kalinsky really loves Wu's work, especially his current line which will be featured in a trunk show Thursday and Friday at Jeffrey Atlanta at Phipps Plaza. (11am-4pm)

Jason Wu's gorgeous Fall 2011 Collection will, of course, grace the Jeffrey Fashion Cares 144ft runway on August 29th.

In the meantime...

lets take a look at some of the exquisitely tailored looks that Jason Wu sent down the runway in NY Fashion Week last month. The collection was inspired by the restoration of Versailles and Wu himself dubbed the line as "baroque meets sportswear."

Founded by acclaimed Atlanta and New York retailer Jeffrey Kalinsky, Jeffrey Fashion Cares Atlanta will once again be held in a stunning high-rise in the 12th & Midtown development located at Peachtree and 12th Street. Louise Sams, Jeffrey McQuithy and Lila Hertz are returning as the Co-Chairs for the 2011 event that includes a pre-show reception, fashion show, and features special guest designer Jason Wu. The dynamic threesome promises to bring just as many exciting initiatives as they did last year to help continue Jeffrey Fashion Cares Atlanta’s legacy as one of the Southeast’s most anticipated and prestigious fundraisers. Benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure—Greater Atlanta Affiliate and the Atlanta AIDS Fund (AAF), last year’s sold-out event raised $650,000 and donated $.93 out of every dollar to the two organizations. In its history, Jeffrey Fashion Cares has grown into one of the largest combined AIDS and breast cancer benefits in the country. This year, a small donation will also be made to the Medical University of South Carolina’s Inflammation and Fibrosis Research Center of Excellence.

Jeffrey Atlanta & UrbanCouture

by Mary Alice Hull

don-purcell-vincent-martinez-malori-rodriguez-mary-alice-hull-urbancouture-jeffrey-atlanta-fashionado

A few Fridays ago I had the pleasure of joining Vincent Martinez and his fashion students at Jeffrey Atlanta for one of the most entertaining and knowledgeable breakfasts of which I have had the honor to be a part.

This particular morning came about following the showcase of Vincent’s students amazing work at the “Doggies on the Catwalk” a few weeks prior. Don Purcell, Jeffrey Atlanta's General Manager, and friend Cathleen Smith, were sitting together at the show. They were amazed that high school students could produce such profound work! The two were so impressed with the students that they decided that it would be extremely fun and of course educational (this was during school!) to have the students come in, before regular work hours,  to Jeffrey Atlanta and see the work of some of the world’s top designers!

[caption id="attachment_6980" align="aligncenter" width="478" caption="Don Purcell talks about Lanvin and it's deconstructed details."]don-purcell-jeffrey-atlanta-urbancouture-malori-rodriguez-mary-alice-hull-lanvin-vincent-martinezfashionado[/caption]

This is an opportunity that might only come about for those amateur designers chosen for Project Runway and clearly is not something that many of us are privy to.  With the opportunity at hand, Vincent jumped at the chance and here we are; Friday morning at Jeffrey Atlanta. I had never been inside Jeffrey before, but being familiar with the store after attending and working Jeffrey Fashion Cares this past fall, I believed that I was walking into a business that is generous and unbelievably kind, and my beliefs were proven accurate.

The breakfast began at 9AM and as I walked through the halls of Phipps Plaza  I couldn’t help but feel a delighted giddiness about walking into Jeffrey Atlanta, before hours to enjoy an audience with the man who knows it all! Don Purcell, gave precise details to each piece of clothing  as well as it’s designer’s background. Who gets that chance? One could google a designer all day long and read about their background and what got them started, their inspirations, etc. but the energy that was created from Don and his expansive wealth of knowledge was something that truly can’t be found on the internet, much less in the usual high school classroom. It was like butter hearing him talk.

don-purcell-jeffrey-atlanta-vincent-martinez-malori-rodriguez-mary-alice-hull-caren-west-fashionado

As someone who would like to fancy themselves knowledgeable about fashion and tries to be cutting edge and on the brink, I was mesmerized. Then I saw the student’s faces and I realized that their absorption was on a level beyond my own. It was easy to understand because Don captured the room not only with his content but with his passion. Suddenly, it was very clear to me that the students recognized this as a rare and treasured opportunity. Don cast vision for these future designers, he made them believe that they could accomplish greater things, but also modeled the courage that their dreams, like his own could come true.

It was a privilege for me to observe and to be a part of this inspiration for future designers. I won’t forget it. But I suspect that my own appreciation is a fraction of the gratitude felt by the future designers themselves. Thank you Don and Vincent for the opportunity!

RUNWAY ~jeffrey fashion cares~ 2010

jeffrey-fashion-cares-coco-chanel-atlanta-kalinsky-fashionado

If I had to characterize the runway show at

Jeffrey Fashion Cares

with just one word, that word would be :

COLOR!

Thankfully, I can use a few more words.

On the evening before the event, I was chatting with Jeffrey Atlanta store manager,

Don Purcell

about the fashions for this year's show. We were at a small gathering, so in a relaxed environment and over drinks, Don told me to expect about 60 looks, that the models would be styled with a strong lip and the presentation would be very polished. All correct!

Lets add

chic

and

sophisticated

to the list of descriptors.

Dozens of beautiful models, made even taller by very high stilettos, paraded up and down 144 feet of pristine white runway. The most vibrant greens, yellows, blues and fuchsias captured our eyes and held our attention captive, at least until the next stunning look. The runway show was seamless and cohesive - not a simple accomplishment when considering the fashion show was a representation of many designers.

I'd say that the Peach State bit into the Big Apple with the 18th Annual Jeffrey Fashion Cares Benefit.

HAVE A LOOK:

after-partying with Proenza Schouler

proenza-schouler-jack-mccollough-lazaro-hernandez-jeffrey-kalinsky-fashionado

I've been a fan of

Proenza Schouler

for many many seasons so going into

Jeffrey Fashion Cares

with the knowledge I would get to meet them was a huge thrill. As

Jack McCollough

and

Lazaro Hernandez

entered the media suite at the Loews, the entire room first got quiet then followed by greetings and smiles. I was joined by the Examiner's

Anastasia Simon

and WSBTV's

Heather Catlin

as we worked our way towards an introduction. The two ladies and I enjoyed a few pleasurable minutes with fashion's "golden boys." They had just finished telling us about their mini- beach vacay when the publicist whisked them away... and though I felt certain I wouldn't have another chance to speak with them again, I was content to have spent five minutes in their company.

Boy was I wrong about not seeing them again!

Fast forward to the after party at Opera... Within minutes of my arrival, I see my newly found Cuban friend,

Felix Buitrago

. Fabulous Felix and I headed upstairs to VIP for a drink and ended up chatting up a 90 minute storm with Jack and Lazaro. Our bartender, Michael, held the four of us captive with flowing champagne.

This was Proenza Schouler's first time in Atlanta and they commented on the high level of southern hospitality they had received. "Everyone is so nice and have treated us wonderfully" they said.  A refreshing change from NY, perhaps?

Jack and Lazaro have a tremendous amount of work waiting for them in NY as they are only two weeks away from fashion week. They were remarkably calm, considering. When I asked them how often they fight, at first they giggled and then replied "we don't fight much at all." They added that it gets difficult at times because they are together 24/7, but that sharing a similar design aesthetic helps them agree more so than disagree.

Jack and Lazaro met while studying at Parsons under none other than the incomparable Tim Gunn. They pointed out elements that contributed to their success. The fact that their vision is unified makes it easier to produce a collection season after season. They also spoke [modestly] about how so much of their success was luck and chance. Being at the right place at the right time. Lazaro used as an example, the time he slipped a note to Anna Wintour, on a flight. He said that

really

happened and that he did it because it was an opportunity which had been placed before him. Lazaro felt he needed to "cease the moment." That moment got him an internship with Michael Kors. Jack interned with Marc Jacobs.

Felix and I didn't want to just talk shop with Proenza Schouler.

They were both so friendly and approachable. The champagne kept flowing and our conversation shifted into more personal things. Nothing scandalous!

We spoke about tattoos. Jack has a quarter sleeve on his right arm and they both have an identical tiny star behind their left ear. Felix asked them about it, but they weren't forthcoming with details, just that there's a lot of history between them. They did smile over the question.

Lazaro's mother, who lives in Miami, recently cooked Jack's favorite Cuban dish which is

picadillo

. They like their

yuca

, too.

With all the success and fame Jack and Lazaro have acquired, none of it seems to have gone to their head. They are two of the nicest, down to earth and hottest fashion designers you could meet. These golden boys have travelled the world and have met the likes of  fashion legends like Karl Lagerfeld. They are friends with designer Narciso Rodriguez and spoke fondly of him. And they are CFDA winners. Yet Felix and I hung out with them at the bar like old friends catching up. Fun, friendly and casual. They couldn't have been more "normal" though they are nothing short of extraordinary.

When I asked about the possibility of a Proenza Schouler men's line, I got two different responses. Jack said, "no, that be hard, because our personal style is so casual - tee shirts and jeans" and Lazaro said that "it would be our next step." Draw your own conclusion.

Jeffrey Fashion Cares opened the runway with looks from Proenza Schouler.
