SCAD FASH presents "Shoes: Pleasure and Pain"

Some shoes are made for walking and others, for display. Form was over function most certainly at this exhibit.

SCAD FASH presents "Shoes: Pleasure and Pain," an exhibition organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, that explores the creativity, cultural significance and transformative power of shoes. The exhibition displays more than 200 pairs of shoes, from ancient Egyptian slippers embellished with gold leaf and the seductive signature red soles of Christian Louboutin heels, to cutting-edge designs created by contemporary designers experimenting with new materials and the latest technology. SCAD FASH is honored to be the only southeastern venue for the exhibition.

In addition to the extraordinary range of historic footwear, "Shoes: Pleasure and Pain" features platform boots worn by Elton John, Princess Diana's shoe lasts, and David Beckham's soccer cleats. Styles by numerous celebrated designers and labels such as Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Nike and Vivienne Westwood, as well as two iconic pairs of shoes from film history — the famous red ballet slippers from the film "The Red Shoes" (1948) and the Swarovski crystal slippers featured in Disney's "Cinderella" (2015) — are also included.

"Shoes: Pleasure and Pain" is curated around five themes: "Transformation," "Status," "Seduction," "Creation" and "Obsession." Designers' sketches, shoemaking materials and historic fashion illustrations provide a deeper understanding of the exhibition's themes. Debuting with the exhibition is "Touching the Sole," a special interactive tactile display that enables visually impaired visitors to engage with replicas of many of the shoes displayed.

The exhibit runs through August 11th and is a must see! Click here for TICKETS.

Carolina Herrera: "Refined Irreverence" at SCAD FASH

The Carolina Herrera exhibit, "Refined Irreverence" at SCAD FASH, will leave you breathless. The fashion retrospective features nearly 100 pieces of ready-to-wear, red carpet and bridal looks from the House of Herrera. The exhibit walks you through Carolina's Herrera's inaugural collection from 1981 to the present. Some of the looks were clearly from the 80's with their shoulders and silhouette but most of them were timeless - a true testament to the classic elegance that is the House of Herrera. The ability to walk up to all the gowns and see [and examine] them up close is something that is quite amazing. The stitching, detailing and quality of each and every piece is impeccable. The exhibit itself, carries such presence. It is truly exquisite.

We are extremely fortunate to be featuring Refined Irreverence in Atlanta. This is a must-see retrospective for every fashion lover, enthusiast and designer - a celebration of an extraordinary thirty-five year career. Carolina Herrera was awarded SCAD's prestigious Étoile Award in May.

Carolina Herrera: Refined Irreverence, which also showcases gowns worn by Michelle Obama, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga, runs through September 4th at SCAD FASH.

DANIEL LISMORE: Be Yourself; Everyone Else Is Already Taken

SCAD FASH, the Savannah College of Art and Design’s museum celebrating fashion and film, presents “DANIEL LISMORE. Be Yourself; Everyone Else Is Already Taken” — the first U.S. exhibition featuring the work of artist, stylist and designer Daniel Lismore — from Jan. 22–May 1, 2016.

Curated by Rafael Gomes, director of fashion exhibitions at SCAD, “Be Yourself; Everyone Else Is Already Taken” features 30 ensembles styled by Lismore exclusively for SCAD FASH and includes hundreds of items on loan from Lismore’s extensive personal wardrobe. Lismore is known for his distinctive ensembles that brilliantly combine couture garments with myriad found objects — from vintage fabrics and accessories to ethnic jewelry and millinery — to form an expression of eccentric, creative energy that reflects his unique sartorial point of view. The core of Lismore’s artistic practice is sustainable fashion, a growing design philosophy that espouses creative reuse, upcycling of materials and reduction of impact on the environment. In recognition of his efforts on this front, retail clothing company H&M selected Lismore in September 2015 to be a face of its “Close the Loop” campaign promoting recycling in the fashion industry.

A prominent fixture in the London fashion circuit, Lismore has been the subject of exhibitions at the prestigious TateModern, London in 2013 and TateBritain, London in 2014. He studied photography and fashion design before beginning a career as a model. He was photographed by Mario Testino, Phil Poynter, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, and Ellen von Unwerth, landing him on the pages of Vogue UK, i-D magazine and L’Uomo Vogue. He progressed from modeling into editorial work, contributing to and illuminating the wardrobes of various European magazines. Lismore has collaborated with American rapper Azealia Banks to concept shows and the artwork of her first album, “Broke with Expensive Taste,” and he was the inspiration behind pop artist Iggy Azalea’s “Glory” EP cover.Additionally,Lismore has been featured in the music videos of Boy George, George Michael and Alexandra Burke, and he has appeared in “Made in Chelsea,” “Britain’s Next Top Model,” “Denmark’s Next Top Model,” “The Kylie Show,” “Styled to Rock” and the upcoming 2016 feature film “Absolutely Fabulous.” Since 2012 Lismore has been the creative director of Sorapol, a luxury womenswear label worn by fashion influencers such as Naomi Campbell, Kylie Minogue, Nicki Minaj, Paloma Faith, Cara Delevingne and Debbie Harry. In recent years he has supported organizations such as Vivienne Westwood’s Climate Revolution, climate change charity Cool Earth and New World International Kenya. Lismore also lends his support to the LGBT community, human rights issues and free speech movements.

This show runs concurrent to “A Fashionable Mind: Photographs by Jonathan Becker”.
