DRAGONCON 2015 REWIND

by Nicholas Cox

Labor Day weekend marks the return of the cos-players dream convention, Dragoncon. Thousands flooded the downtown hotel district dressed as every character imaginable ranging from famous heroes such as Batman to more obscure fantasy figures. The four day event features a Saturday parade that has become an adopted tradition for Atlanta residents. Follow the track of your choice and attend panels on a wide variety of topics before sipping cocktails with Darth Vader and the X-men. The nights are the best party of the year, with  the most accepting crowd and there is a let your nerd flag fly vibe. People watch and snap pics with the some of the most ornate home-made costumes ever made. Next year will be even better. Can't wait!!

The Legendary Moulin Rouge of Paris is Coming to New York City

moulin-rouge-paris-nyc-fashionado

The Moulin Rouge has officially confirmed their landmark voyage to the United States, as a part of this year’s BEST OF FRANCE celebration in Time Square, taking place on September 26, 2015 from 10:00am to 8:00pm and September 27, 2015 from 10:00am-7:00pm. Organized by the New York French Community in partnership with many prominent organizations, this third edition of BEST OF FRANCE, formerly known as Taste of France. The celebration is expected to have thousands of visitors over the course of the weekend, attendees will enjoy free entrance to walk the festival grounds and see abridged Moulin Rouge performances and fashion shows.

The French review is bringing “a Taste of Moulin Rouge” to New York City for the first time in 126 years, highlighting all of the glamour and elation that is a part of the French staple’s rich history. During their short time in NYC, the Moulin Rouge dancers will be making appearances at New York City’s most well-known landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building and Times Square. Over the years, the Moulin Rouge has become the most famous cabaret in the world, internationally known for its French Cancan, immortalized by Toulouse-Lautrec in 1891 with his first advertising poster, as well as for its sumptuous grand stage shows: elaborate costumes boasting feathers, Swarovski crystals and sequins, fantastical settings, and original music.

“This is a widely anticipated event. The Moulin Rouge will greet the city that never sleeps for the first time in over 100 years,” says Moulin Rouge CEO, Jean-Jacques Clerico. “We are absolutely thrilled to participate in BEST OF FRANCE it is truly an honor to be part of something that encourages such strong global ties and cultural values. What better way to bring our legendary show to a legendary city than with our lavish costumes, majestic dances, and sensational French energy.”

The Moulin Rouge will perform two live shows daily at BEST OF FRANCE, in addition to the performances Moulin Rouge will host a daily Costume Fashion Show. Scheduled times as follows:

Project Runway with the Rockettes!

Tim Gunn

and

Heidi Klum

high kick it with the NYC

Rockettes

- how cute is that! The seven

Project Runway

designers met up with them at Radio City Music Hall to learn of their next challenge which included sequins, spangles, beadwork, fringe and two visits to Mood...

Debra Messing

served as the Project Runway guest judge.  The winner of the challenge will have their design produced and worn by the Rockettes.

Now that's worth a few high kicks!

The two big problems with Sonjia's outfit are functionality and the lack of sex appeal. The feathers would not survive a season of wear and the costume, overall, was kind of blah. It lacked sparkle and pizazz. Sonjia was in the bottom, but safe.

Fabio was safe. I really like the metallic shimmer of his costume but didn't care too much for it's style. It looked more Gladiator than Rockette.

Elena came very close to going home with this shiny blue majorette -esque looking outfit. The judges said it was too matchy matchy and looked cheap. Elena wept.

I didn't care for Melissa's costume at all. The judges didn't give her the lowest scores but they too had their issues with it. Take away: model looked like a "cigarette girl."

Michael Kors

said if you dropped the skirt long, Dmitry's outfit could be a red carpet dress. The judges loved it [as did I]. It was very sparkly, provided outstanding movement from the beaded fringed skirt and had loads of visual appeal. Dmitry didn't win the challenge but it was a very close call.

Goodbye! Adios! Auf Wiedersehen!

YES I am happy to see Ven Budhu go home! Now he's free to design all the "origami" rose corsets for super skinny women, forever if he wants...

Christopher Palu, who was adorably star-struck with guest judge Debra Messing, was ecstatic to win the challenge. The judges unanimously agreed that his costume was stunning, beautiful and sophisticated. They especially loved the concept of integrating the iconic NYC skyline into the design. Perfection.
