The Peter Mui Tattoo Art Collection At Auction in NYC

More Than One Thousand Works Of Original Tattoo Art to Be Sold November 13-14

New York City-based auction house Guernsey’s, well-known for producing many unusual auctions, will be conducting an unprecedented auction of the Peter Mui Collection of Original Tattoo Art this November 13-14 in the heart of lower Manhattan’s trendy Meatpacking District at 22 Little West 12th Street. The late Mr. Mui was a highly-regarded fashion designer, actor, and musician; the sale is being conducted on behalf of his family.

The Mui Collection, which will be sold in more than one thousand unreserved lots, is believed to be the largest collection of original Tattoo Art by what many consider to be the world's most accomplished Tattoo artists. For over fifteen years Mui traveled the globe, seeking out the top Tattoo masters of every style. His collection consists of original works on art board, canvas, and paper by noteworthy artists such as Japan's Horiyoshi III, Horitomo, Horitoyo, and Horitaka; Swiss artist Filip Leu; American Traditional Tattoo icon Bob Roberts; Spain's Tattoo realist Robert Hernandez; Biomechanical Tattoo pioneers Guy Aitchison and Aaron Cain; and Tribal Tattoo artists Leo Zulueta and Roger Ingerton.

The majority of the art in the Mui Collection exists as full (often vivid) color, torso-sized original paintings consisting of extraordinary images and designs. Smaller images known as “Flash Art" will also be included in the sale. Other than this unique auction, examples of original Tattoo Art can be found in a number of the world's leading museums.

Although the use of Tattoos to adorn the human body pre-dates recorded history, it is over the last several decades that the art of Tattooing has gained true international recognition. No longer limited to smaller and simpler designs applied to a very few, today one need not go far to encounter Tattoo enthusiasts who proudly display far more extravagant images and designs that often cover extensive portions of their bodies. With the proliferation of Tattoo Art, it is no surprise that a select group of Tattoo artists have risen to exalted positions, generating large groups of admirers.

Though their work was mostly limited to body applications, Mui was successful in appealing to the finest mainstream artists and ultimately responsible for making their creations recognized as the world's finest collection of Tattoo Art. His sudden and premature passing in 2009 left his family with his massive, archivally-maintained, totally unique collection. Inasmuch as Mui was an active buyer at Guernsey's events and was a personal friend of Arlan Ettinger, Guernsey's president, it was only natural that the Collection go in the direction of the New York-based auction house.

Gardenias for Grandmother Tattoos

vincentm-martinez-malia-reynolds-tattoos-fashionado
It was only fitting that my first tattoo be in honor of my beloved grandmother. Though she past away more than fifteen years ago, her spirit, love, energy and memory are with me everyday. I knew a tattoo of "our" favorite flower would be the perfect homage for someone I adored. After all, tattoos are for life, so they better be meaningful.

Enter, Malia Reynolds. Amazing and talented.

After graduating from college with a degree in graphic design, Malia made the (wise) choice not to compete in that crazy job market. Instead, she listened to her friends who urged her to become a tattoo artist.

This tattoo started it all for me...  A gardenia on my shoulder for my Grandmother. We consulted on the design and it's placement. And though it hurt like a bitch, Malia was gentle, tender and very pleasant. The devil's music (Metal - not Malia's choice) played in the background and kept me somewhat distracted.

When consulting with a tattooer, it is important to remember they are artists, and even though  you are "commissioning" art on your body, its bests to allow the tattooer's style and vision to be present in the work. Malia and I have a great professional relationship that respects this idea. I'll come up with the subject matter for a design and Malia develops the concept through her artistic interpretation. After a final consultation, we're ready to start. This has always been a quick an easy process for me because I love Malia's work so much.

The sleeve we've been working on all summer. This was my third visit since June. Malia started on the color this time. My next visit, in two weeks, will continue with color, followed by more outlining, in later sessions. You can find Malia at Memorial Tattoo on Moreland Avenue. You'll love Memorial Tattoo as well. From the welcoming smile of Lee Yarbrough at the front desk to the friendly visits from owner and gifted artist, Phil Colvin, Memorial offers you an inviting environment.

Tit for Tat

Ouch! Yes! Ouch, it hurts!!

Tattoos. I recently had another session and this time it hurt more than the others as my artist worked near bony areas and on my chest. I don’t enjoy the pain at all, but I sure love the product. I got my first tattoo when I was 41 and got hooked with the personal significance of the images I am placing on my body, and with their beauty.

So is it fashion?

To an extent, especially when celebrities are sporting them more and more and they are working their way unto glossy fashion magazines. There is also a certain, underlying fashion/artistic element when choosing where on the body to put a tattoo. Call it what you want, disagree all you like, but it is fashion when you have to think about the area on your body the tattoo will work and look best on.

Tattoos are becoming socially acceptable as they become a mainstream, but lets keep it real: get one for the right reasons-not for fashion- and remember, you wear them for life!

The amazing artist whose done all my work is Malia Reynolds at Memorial Tattoo.
