Project PROM
/
As an educator at Grady High School, I have been to prom for the past eight years. For most students, especially the girls, it's a very special night full of glamour. But for girls facing socioeconomic hardships, prom is sadly a privilege they can't afford. When I was presented with a partnership opportunity to create an event that would raise awareness of the struggles of under-privileged students while providing prom dresses to girls in need, the decision was a no-brainer, especially because I could involved my students.
I wanted to collaborate with fashion students from other places as well, so I contacted an old friend and a new friend. Karron English of English Design Lab and Jason Bunin, SCAD Atlanta fashion faculty have been fantastic to work with on Project Prom. They are both accomplished designers with giving heart(s).
Together, along with students, the three of us tackled yards of endless beading, tulle, sequins and feathers. [For a while, my fashion room looked liked a drag queen exploded!] The intention was to beautify and modernize the outdated gowns that were generously donated by Becca's Closet. Making the dresses desirable was indeed a challenge, but not impossible. Some [really] just needed repairs, while others were shortened to knee length, made strapless and/or de-beaded.
Please join Karron, Jason and me on Sunday March 20th at the W Midtown for Project Prom!
For the Kid In All of Us (FTK), who are devoted to improving the quality of life of under-served children in Atlanta, are the masterminds behind the highly successful Toy Party and Back Pack in the Park. The Facebook buzz for Project Prom is generating quickly through the energy of very dedicated FTK Board members, Brigid Scarbrough, Holly Smith and FTK Director Chris Bess - all have changed their profile picture to the event flyer. Other enthusiastic and passionate members are Carl, Frank, Maggie and Jorge... [Brigid and Holly have been instrumental in the planning of this event. I would love to get them in a prom dress!]
The Emcee for the evening is the fabulous Kaedy Kiely of 97.1 The River who is quite excited about the event.
Miss Georgia Christina McCauley is our special guest and will be sparkling on the runway - Authentic Beauty and The Green Room Agency will make sure of that.
And the super cool DJ Vicki Powell will be spinning her music magic!
Project Prom takes place in the gorgeous 27th floor ballroom of the W Midtown who is the presenting sponsor. The city views from that level are spectacular and are reason enough to attend! BUT here are more reasons:
Seating is limited for Project Prom so hurry and purchase your TICKETS!
Support For the Kid in All of Us and this very fashionable good cause. It's going to be a great evening for everyone. Something I've learned about working with FTK is that they don't do anything halfway - they go all the way - wonderfully!
