pink_scarf_satchelWhat do you get when you combine the ultra softness of lambskin, the elegance of silk, luxurious cashmere and really good kharma — Mi Energia handbags and scarves. Chilean born, Susan Pielsticker is the genuis behind the label and speaks passionately about her work:

fashionado: Tell me about your choice of textiles.

Mi Energia: In trying to decide what to make the bags out of I knew that I wanted them to be of very high quality. I’m a huge bag collector and a lot of the bags that are being produced today are of non-

leather. I wanted mine to be very soft and very light and that’s how I chose lambskin.

fashionado: How do your bags wear?

Mi Energia: I’m not very careful with my bags and they are holding up nicely. The leather is already so soft and getting even softer with wear.

fashionado: I noticed your bags are made in the USA.

Mi Energia: I did my research and found companies that manufactured over seas yet I kept coming back to Kiran Bindra of InStyle Exchange and the fact that I really wanted my bags made in the USA.

fashionado: How did you come up with the name Mi Energia?

Mi Energia: I’m a divorced mom of twins for about 5 years now and I am really into positivity and doing things to increase self confidence. I have a degree in psychology and I have always been fascinated with metaphysics and human behavior. I find it intriguing how you can control your mind. I’m always trying to keep myself motivated, driven and confident. I used to keep a piece of paper in my purse with affirmations like: “I am happy; I am strong” so I decided to merge the self help concept into the whole line which is how the affirmations got printed unto the silk lining of every bag. Mi Energia is spanish for ” my energy.” I needed the bags to have a lot of meaning and be personal.

fashionado: With your line, you have achieved form, function and substance. Would you say that’s what separates Mi Energia from others?

Mi Energia: I wanted my bags to have a purpose more than the physical. I wanted it to be mental as well, so they are more than just bags  or just scarves. I wanted to go beyond fashion.

Susan Pielsticker is an inspiration to fashion design. It was refreshing to speak with someone who loves fashion, style and beauty and is not misguided with its superficiality. Susan has successfully intertwined substance and beauty into a must-have line of handbags and scarves. Symbolism never looked so good!

Let Them Eat CAKE!

January 28th, 2010

Highland Bakery is one of my favorite breakfast and lunch spots in the city. If you’ve ever dined 4007457141_d3232c57c8there then you know what I’m talking about. But did you know Highland Bakery is the place to get the fanciest, most artistic cakes in Atlanta? Karen Portaleo is their cake designer and she calls them “sculptural” cakes. I call them couture! These cakes are works of art. Exquisite. Stunning. Original and Edible!!! YES, and not only are these cakes beautiful works of art they are also moist and super delicious.

Karen’s background is in fine arts. Her medium is clay and painting and now, well, its still painting, but she replaced the clay with something much yummier like dough, buttercream and icing. It took a little convincing of Highland Bakery owner Stacey Eames to strut down the designer cake runway, but she gave Karen a chance and the concept took off quickly. Now with the assistance of a great publicist, Jamie Annarino, Red Clay PR, no one’s left their cake out in the rain.

Karen’s client list is impressive. She has sweetened the lives of queens and housewives from Elton John to  Sheree Whitfield of Real Housewives of Atlanta. According to Jamie, these cakes are so elaborate that often people don’t realize they are cakes until they are being cut. What’s even more astonishing is that Karen is the person doing the cutting, which is not always an easy task, as she pointed out, ” I’m working against time because I am working with food (perishable) and sometimes I have to stay up all night long  to finish just to take a knife to the cake the next day and cut it up into many pieces!”

Sheree's Independence cake.

This week, TLC was filming at Highland Bakery. I met a few friends for lunch to catch some of the action. There were video cameras, lights and large microphones all over the place. TLC was filming for a new show called, America Eats. Highland Bakery has been noted as one of the top bakeries/restaurants in the nation. It was exciting! (My excitement continued when) Karen took me downstairs to the baking studio for a peek at her latest creation! Again, I found myself mesmerized by the beauty, craftsmanship and overall exquisiteness of her design. Karen used bright saturated color with 24k accents to create a Hindu inspired masterpiece.  It’s a good thing I was full from lunch!

If you haven’t had the pleasure of dining at Highland Bakery, treat yourself. And, if you are in the market for a show-stopping, sculptural cake, ask for Karen.
