Steve Aoki Remixes "The Best," by David Choe's Band Mangchi
Mangchi, the experimental punk outfit led by notorious artist David Choe, gets the remix treatment from friend and collaborator Steve Aoki. Aoki transforms “The Best" into a late night club record full of high-energy synths and deep basslines on this heavy 4/4 workout. The boastful vocals don’t lie when they say, “it’s the motherf*cking best.” The artwork for the release is an original piece by David Choe and features his signature Munko whales.
With punk rock roots and DIY attitudes, Choe and Aoki are the perfect dyad. Earlier this year, the two collaborated at January’s North American launch of the Dim Mak Collection (DMC) at New York Fashion Week. Several of Choe’s illustrations were incorporated onto items within the DMC Fall/Winter 2017 collection and his surrealistic punk band, Mangchi, performed live during the DMC NYFW17 presentation.
Through Choe’s unique lens, Mangchi’s explosion of art and noise is on full display in the video for “The Best (view here).” Mangchi is the Korean translation for the word “hammer;” according to a video-only press release, their sound can be described as “A fart from a child without a butthole.” The LA-based group features several talented musicians, including legendary keyboardist Money Mark (of the Beastie Boys.)
Steve Aoki is a Grammy-nominated international producer/DJ, electronic dance music entrepreneur, and founder of the trendsetting record label, events/lifestyle company and apparel line Dim Mak. During a monumental 2016, Aoki celebrated Dim Mak’s 20th anniversary through curated stages in 20 cities around the world and the release of a special edition compilation album. His sonic roots were on full display last year when he remixed songs by legendary emo and punk bands My Chemical Romance (“Black Parade”) and Blink-182 (“Bored to Death.”) Additionally, he earned his second Grammy nomination for the Best Music Film category for his Netflix original documentary I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, which chronicles his fast-paced life as a DJ/producer.
He closed 2016 by collaborating with One Direction member Louis Tomlinson on “Just Hold On," which debuted at #1 in 43 countries and has since achieved Gold or Platinum status in 18 countries. Aoki is currently promoting his latest single “Without U” off his forthcoming album. The track is a collaboration with DJ/producer duo DVBBS and features 2 Chainz.
