"The theme of the collection this time is MONSTER. It's not about the typical Monster you find in sci-fi and video games. The expression of the Monsters I have made has a much deeper meaning. The craziness of humanity, the fear we all have, the feeling of going beyond common sense, the absence of ordinariness, expressed by something extremely big, by something that could be ugly or beautiful. In other words, I wanted to question the established standards of beauty." Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garçons.

I am seriously obsessing! Rei Kawakubo gave us living, breathing human art disguised as fashion.

What is beauty anyway? And does it have to be functional or wearable? View Collection:

Comme des Garçons Fall 2012

Rei Kawakubo celebrated two-dimensional flatness. It was all about shape at Comme des Garçons for Fall 2012. However, the celebration may have been more of a statement about the trivialization of fashion through on line media services that reduce the garments to a flat shape.

The models were featured as paper doll cut outs and Rei Kawakubo highlighted overused fashion patterns like polka dots and camouflage. Sequins for evening wear. Performance art or runway collection? You decide. Either way, no one can argue that fashion is simply shallow and mindless.

Comme des Garçons 2012

There are fashion designers and then there are artists who design fashion. And though I love them all, my heart always leans towards the ones that utilize the runway as theater, canvas or a pedestal for their vision. The garments are sometimes, not necessarily wearable. But they make statements just like a song writer does with powerful lyrics or a painter with a brush and an opinion. You may not always "get" it but keeping an open mind is critical.

Enter,

Comme des Garçons

Spring 2012.

Designer

Rei Kawakubo

takes us on a dramatic journey in lavish white satins that displayed a collection about life, birth, death and every major event in between.

The pieces are more conceptual than referential in some cases. Kawakubo interpreted life's major events through garments that represented ritualistic tradition such as christening and wedding gowns.

The result was a collection empowered with the spirit of the avant-garde and the structural presence of couture.
