How the Fashion and Luxury Car Industries Sell Us a Lifestyle

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week

by Cecelia Perez

You've heard of Mercedez-Benz and you've heard of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Have you ever asked yourself why a luxury car brand would sponsor the foremost semi-annual fashion week event in the United States?

Cars and fashion have long experienced a symbiotic relationship. In fashion week celebrations all over the world you'll find sponsorships, displays or collaborative projects between automobile makers and fashion labels.

Luxury Begets Luxury

The cynical would say fashion is really just expensive clothing. That's like saying a Michaelangelo is just a doodle. Fashion sells us lifestyle, confidence and beauty—and so do major brands. Even Phoenix Fashion Week, next scheduled for October, uses more than fashion to sell clothes.

Imagine two consumers from Phoenix: one lives primarily in shorts from Walmart and local team sports gear. The other shops at Scottsdale boutiques and won't consider jeans unless they're Lucky Brand or better. Which consumer is going to start shopping for a new car at

Phoenix BMW

and which will scour used car lots?

That doesn't tell us about the financial stability, job status or anything else about those consumers. But it's easy to see that one values luxury and style. That's the demographic luxury car manufacturers want to target.

Every Brand Has a Type

This is never more apparent than at an auto show. Take a look at different companies' showcases, and don't forget to really look at the models, often referred to as booth babes. Their entire appearance is designed to support the branding of the car and the brand as a whole. One such model blogs anonymously at thetruthaboutcars.com. Booth babes represent "aspirational brand messages," she wrote. They serve to tell consumers, subconsciously of course, what that brand is about. Jeep and off-road SUV brands present their products differently than BMW and other luxury brands.

Fashion designers do the same thing. The decor, lighting and music set the stage for the clothing you'll see on the runway.

A Betsey Johnson show

will always be kookier than a Michael Kors show. That's the way it should be. Those brands have different audiences and consumers. High fashion is about more than what you wear, it's about who you want to be.

The Ultimate Match-Up

When Fiat set its sights on the American market in 2012, one car stood out from the rest. The Fiat 500 by Gucci was in many ways just a Fiat 500—but it was also a designer car. If you loved Gucci, like wouldn't-carry-any-other-handbag LOVE them, wouldn't you be tempted to go test drive this car? Can you imagine your favorite car, maybe a BMW M-series convertible or an Audi roadster, with a Louis Vuitton-styled interior? Until we see how successful Fiat's sales of the specialty car are, it's hard to speculate whether we'll see other brands following suit.

What's your dream car/designer match-up? We'd love to hear from you in the comments!

Mad Morning!

mad-men-cbs-better-mornings-atlanta-fashionado

Nothing says GOOD MORNING louder than a Blood Mary! It is the "breakfast of champions." Well, today's champions were mad - totally mad about Mad Men season 6.

Better Mornings

Atlanta on CBS got groovy in the 9am hour with mad fashion, style and cooking features.

mad-men-cbs-better-mornings-atlanta-bloomingdales-rent-the-runway-fashionado

Anchor

Tracye Hutchins

got the style segment to a glamourous start with

Dafina Smith

of

Sunny's Hair

in the floral dress,

Plaid Monkey's

Robanne Schulman

in the black lace and I got the guys dapper-mad!

Robanne, Dafina and their lovely Megan Draper-

esque

model, Sarah were wearing modern designer frocks with a sixties vibe from

Rent the Runway

. Sunny's Hair provided the extensions and

White Salon and Spa

whipped out the hairdos... and make up.

Pow!

And here we have a pair of Don Draper bookends. If

only

I were a book!

This was a blast to talk about because

Todd Piercy

(center) was dressed in a Theory suit, John Varvatos tie and I in a Hugo Boss shirt/trousers and a Scott James blazer, ALL from

Bloomingdale's

. Anchor,

Brandon Rudat

, on the other hand, wore his own suit and shirt. (I styled him in a Hugo Boss tie and pocket square from Bloomingdale's.) It was a great example of how to "shop your closet" for specific looks.

As if the fashion chatter wasn't fun enough,

Sean O'Keefe

got cooking! Here he is pouring roasted tomato soup as the Mad Men and Women enjoyed his spicy bloodies in vintage glassware by Tiffany's.

In keeping with the 1960's,

Meg Reggie

even made sure that Pop Art was represented. Our mugs appropriately placed on soup cans. Warhol would be proud.

Weatherman

Paul Ossmann

was reminiscing of his childhood over a grilled cheese and tomato soup combo. Delicious btw!

Thank you

Better Mornings

... We covered the fashion, style and cuisine of the time... Now it's up to Mad Men to handle the rest... season premiere is April 7th.

Size Does Not Matter...I Repeat, Size Doesn't Matter - Just Ask Adeleand Emme

by Tracy Hogan

adele-fashionado

Call them normal, call them plus size, call them whatever you like; these beloved women have captured the hearts of audiences everywhere, as they strut their stuff straight into the spotlight. Gracing the cover of magazines and awarded for their incredible talents and spirits, these women are all about style, grace, body, mind and soul.

It's so important for our role models to emphasize a healthy body image and self-esteem when time and time again, boys and girls are chastised for being overweight. The importance of exercise and eating right is more visible than ever, as it should be, but thanks to ladies like

Adele

,

Robyn Lawley

and

Emme

, women can

feel more confident

in their own skin, seeing that being super-skinny isn't what matters.

Emme: Strength

The first "supersize super model,"

Emme

is a vision of beauty, strength and dignity. She exudes positivity, and she captures the attention of everyone around. She provides an online forum and trusted resource for women of all shapes, sizes and ethnicities to feel connected and accepted by real, grounded people who celebrate life.

Emme learned she had lymphatic cancer in 2007. But with strength, hope and passion to survive, she came out cancer-free, strong and proud. Health and wellness are at the forefront of her message; she believes in relieving anxiety and stress, releasing anger, developing confidence and living a greener lifestyle.

Robyn Lawley: Grace

When we look at breathtaking supermodel Robyn Lawley, we'd like to thank her sponsors Ralph Lauren and Panache lingerie, clothing like Spanx (for shaping) and

BuyCostumes plus size costumes

(for playing), for showing women of all sizes it's easy to feel and be sexy whenever the occasion calls. Whether she's on a swimwear shoot on the Cook Islands for Cosmopolitan Australia or on the catwalk, she embodies sex appeal, grace and playfulness.

Adele: Class

This has been a big year for our

English queen, Adele

. With awards and accolades across all mediums, she continues to carry herself with grace and dignity. The emotion she evokes from music lovers across the globe is intense, as she digs deep within her soul to tell stories of love and loss. Her style is classy and her attitude is fierce.

Kate Upton: Seduction

Women and men across the world are entranced by the woman we met in the 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Then just 18 years old, Upton has become the face of the all-American supermodel. While looking at this bombshell, you wouldn't at all think she was plus size (well, when discussing sizes 0-6, "plus" is relative), however she has been criticized for having a larger frame... ridiculous. She is the essence of woman.

Sizzlin' Stars and Their Smokin' Hot Cars

fast-cars-fashionado

As we mere mortals drool at the site of a Bentley Continental GT, pant at the thought of driving an Aston Martin Rapide and quietly weep with joy when we get to sit in the luxury of a BMW 7-Series. While we are satisfied and often delighted with owning what we can afford, we have no choice but to sit back and gawk at the beautiful and blessed. Hey, money doesn't buy happiness, right?!

Adam Sandler is Gifting Maseratis

Funny guy Adam Sandler is a very generous fellow. Enter four Maseratis at 200 grand each. What's 200 x 4? That's $800,000 he shelled out for his "Grown Ups" co-stars: Chris Rock, David Spade, Kevin James and Rob Schneider. Chris Rock told Howard Stern he rolled out of bed to find the vehicle sitting pretty in his driveway. The movie cost $80 million to make and brought in $270 million, so really, the gifts were a drop in the bucket of wealth.

The goods: According to Jean Knows Car's

car guide

, the Maserati is an Italian stallion of sorts. The manufacturer began building race cars in the early 20th century. Its eye-catching design is sleek, sexy and it performs. The Quattroporte S Sedan starts at $127,250 and gets 13/21 mpg. It's a five-seater with room to spare but will blow any sports car off the road with its Ferrari-engineered V8 engine. 177 mph? No problem.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner — Tesla Model S

Turning over a new green leaf, the Garner-Afflecks have been spotted with a Tesla Model S. It's electric from the ground up. What is Tesla? A new company that sticks solely to cars of

the electric variety

, explains Consumer Reports who says the car is "wicked quick and agile and a hoot to drive." This car can run between $52,400 and $100,000, depending on features and battery size. Each battery step-up is a $10,000. up-charge so it's real easy to find your price tag on the high end. It offers twin onboard chargers which can be filled in 30 minutes. It has large panoramic windows, a 17" touch screen and air suspension. It can go up to 300 miles in one charge and has a top speed of 130 mph.

Other celeb Tesla drivers: Cameron Diaz, Dustin Hoffman, Will.I.Am

Kanye West — Lamborghini Aventador

Kanye's 2-seat "Lambo" is one of the most expensive cars money can buy. It's an Aventador LP700-4 Coupe and starts at (gasp!) $387-thousand dollars. Does it hit 217 mph because of its aerodynamic shape, its jack-knife scissor doors that rotate vertically instead of opening outwardly, the carbon fiber exterior or is it solely the V12? While it looks like it dropped in from the future, it actually came from Italy. Kanye's version come with a custom front seat warmer — the likes of Kim Kardashian.

Want to experience the power of 700 horses? Check out the

Lamborghini Academy

in Cortina, Italy to drive the winter roads where you can get your real-world racing skills for $4500.

Sundance 2013: A fashionista's tale of fashion, nightlife and celebrities.

by

Emily Chandler-Westergreen

[caption id="attachment_19214" align="aligncenter" width="478" caption="Emily Chandler-Westergreen & Michael Cera @ Sundance."]

The

Sundance Film Festival

- the largest Independent film festival in the US - has always been on my bucket list of not-to-be-missed events, but until this year I have never had a reason to attend. Or an invitation. That all changed when I was asked by Atlanta designer Rob Bennett to model his upcoming collection "V by Rob Bennett" at a party hosted by the American Film Institute. OK, let me think about it for a second...ummm yes!

emily-chandler-westergreen-sundance-fashionado

Walking through Park City, Utah is a charming experience anytime of year, and when you populate it with the entire who's who of Hollywood, it's like taking a stroll through your favorite movies and TV shows. Except the celebrities are real. And accessible. Need directions? Just ask a star.

This actually happened when I was in a panic to find the Fender Music Lounge, where Dave Grohl was throwing a private performance. I never found the Fender Music Lounge, but I did run into

Michael C. Hall

. He was crossing the street beside me. I oh-so-causally threw myself in front of a car to get closer. Luckily, Dexter was not in a serial killing mood - he grabbed my arm and guided me safely to the other side, where we took a photo together. "The photo wasn't worth getting killed for," he said. (I slightly disagree.)

[caption id="attachment_19218" align="aligncenter" width="478" caption="Michael C. Hall & Emily "]

michael-c-hall-emily-chandler-westergreen-sundance-fashionado

[/caption]

The days of Sundance are spent bouncing among the numerous gifting suites - I brought a second suitcase home to accommodate the swag. Or hanging out at Nikki Beach, one of the pop up lounges brought in from Miami. Don't mind if I do pop in and grab some lunch. Sitting beside

Robert Redford

and

Michael Cera

didn't hurt the ambiance a bit!

emily-chandler-westergreen-sundance-fashionado

The night time scene is quite different from Fashion Week or other events in cities where everyone is scattered among the vast selection of clubs. At Sundance the only club allowed to stay open past 1AM is

Tao

, so that is where everyone is. Needless to say, that's where my entourage and I found ourselves every night. I bumped into

Paris Hilton

several times there. And I mean that literally. I was in a really crowded space and everyone was mashed up against each other like sardines. I felt a butt pressed up behind mine when a friend taps me on the shoulder and says "Hey Emily, do you realize who you're squeezed up against?"

A major difference between nightlife at Sundance and nightlife, well, everywhere else (besides the star-studded factor) is the fashion. This was the only time I've ever been out to a fancy nightclub wearing snow boots. And when I say snow boot, I don't mean those cute, furry little "look at me" boots, I mean the rubber soled "let me not slip on ice and die" boots. It's like this everywhere at Sundance. You can literally hop of the ski lift and cruise right into the swankiest event in town. I do love my five inch Fashion Week heels, but my feet were a big fan of this laid back Sundance mindset.

Oh wait, the movies. I haven't even mentioned them. Ain't nobody got time to watch a movie at Sundance! I'll catch them on DVD when I can catch my breath and there aren't ten thousand other fabulous things that absolutely have to be added to my ultimate Sundance experience.
