Tuesday Tea with Tina Sloan

Tina Sloan
Tina Sloan

Tuesday was all about Changing Shoes and Tina Sloan. The Guiding Light star turned author, was in Atlanta for the day to promote her soon-to-be best selling book, Changing Shoes.

Tina and I met more than a year ago when she was starring in the stage version of her book and we became instant friends. ( I am a huge Guiding Light fan, by the way!) When I was up in NYC last October, Tina took me to her favorite uptown restaurant. So when she informed me a few months back that she would be in Atlanta on October 5th, a set that date aside.

I surprised Tina with a visit to Fox 5 News. Here she is sitting with Good Day Atlanta's

Karen Graham, chatting about Changing Shoes, the book, the play and getting older with "

style, humor and grace

." It was a wonderful interview.

Tina left Fox and headed to WXIA for another TV interview. This time with  Atlanta & Company.

The afternoon then took a sophisticated turn.

The Four Seasons Atlanta treated us to the most aromatic gourmet teas along with an assortment of delicious finger sandwiches and sweets, including warm scones.

Owner and President of

MSquared PR

(and the mastermind behind the "

CelebriTea

")

Marsha Middleton

, holds Tina's book as we posed for a picture with the soap star herself.

Changing Shoes

has been flying off the bookshelves, its just that good!

The moment had arrived that so many fans of Tina Sloan and Guiding Light had been waiting for, the Changing Shoes  lecture and book signing at Barnes & Noble. Tina had an audience of loyal Southern fans - A captive audience that could have sat all night and listened to Tina share wonderful stories. As expected, much of the talk surrounded the Guiding Light. But many insightful facts about Changing Shoes were also shared. The book is a smash hit, that goes without saying. And surprisingly, its quite popular among men. Changing Shoes resonates with fathers, husbands and brothers as it's message delivers tender, loving guidance on issues that affect the women in our lives.

My sister,

Maria Laracuente

, wouldn't have missed the book signing for any reason. She and I grew up watching the Guiding Light. Maria went to the Changing Shoes play last year and now that she has her personalized inscribed copy, she'll have the book read by the weekend!

Finally, it was my turn to get my copy signed!

Changing Shoes ~ Changing Lives with Tina Sloan

E. Vincent Martinez & Tina Sloan
E. Vincent Martinez & Tina Sloan

"We were in evening gowns because our last scene had been a gala party where we were murdering someone... Oh Beth, you were great in that scene! The way you stabbed him thirty-two times, I loved it. Thank heavens you didn't get any blood on my gown!"

I was feeling fabulous and beautiful, wearing dripping diamond earrings, Christian Louboutin heels, and an Oscar de la Renta canary yellow gown."

With these lines in the opening paragraph, Chapter one, of

Tina Sloan's

new book,

Changing Shoes

, I was hooked.

The delightful and talented

Tina Sloan

, star of the

Guiding Light

, hits hard with a candid, endearing and eye-opening book about

"getting older- NOT OLD- with Style, Humor, and Grace."

Changing Shoes, stylishly tackles the harsh reality of aging, through personal experiences, memories, triumphs and disappointment. There's a lot of fashion talk and shoe talk, yes, but Tina's book is for everyone, male and female, after all, aging is a universal fact of life. Its inevitable. I found myself identifying with Tina's feelings. I was also enlightened with a heightened sensitivity for my mother, my sisters and all women.

Remember the old adage about walking in someone else's shoes?

Tina cleverly walks you through four decades of Capezios, Chanels, Louboutins and well, sensible shoes, each one representing something youthful, funny, sexy or emotional. Changing Shoes is so beautifully written, that you can't help make Tina's experiences your own and relate to her feelings. In many cases, we've lived through similar experiences. Changing Shoes is an insightful window that offers readers answers and direction to real life human struggles about insecurities and self-esteem issues.

You don't have to be a Guiding Light fan to enjoy Changing Shoes. But if you are a fan, then you're in for a real treat! Tina shares so many stories about her twenty-six years as Nurse

Lillian Raines

on the Guiding Light in the book. She masterfully uses her soap character to illustrate her issues about getting older, as a woman and as a TV star.

Another aspect I loved about Changing Shoes is that Tina described how she coped and dealt with life, success, family, loss and aging. The book serves as an inspiration to embrace the changes that come with age proactively and live life to its fullest, at every age!

I've been very fortunate to see Changing Shoes the Play, several times. Reading Changing Shoes the Book was equally engaging and rewarding. Do both is my advice!

If you are in or near Atlanta,

Tina Sloan

will be at the Buckhead

Barnes & Noble

(2900 Peachtree Road Atlanta, GA 30305  404-261-7747) on

October 5th

at 7pm for a Changing Shoes book signing party!

Miss Georgia USA, after the REIGN

As the reign comes to an end for Miss Georgia USA 2009,

Kimberly Gittings

and I chat about the past year and life after the crown. She speaks openly about her platform and how it was a very personal battle.

fashionado:

What's been going on? Tell me what the last few months have been like.

KG:

I've been in Asia, specifically Korea, for the past three months with the prospects of doing commercials, modeling and a soap opera. My challenge has been the language barrier because I don't speak Korean that well, though I am taking classes at the University of Georgia.

Kimberly's plan is to return to Korea to pursue business opportunities, but at the moment, needs to continue her college studies at UGA. She explains that the Koreans love multicultural personalities, in her case its the Korean/Caucasian mix, an advantage to breaking into the film/modeling/tv industry. If she returns to Korea, it could be for nearly a year, an adjustment for her and her family.

Kimberly's major is Biology, Pre-Med and Speech Communications and she is taking Korean as her foreign language. In addition, she is also a Cadet in the Air Force ROTC program.

fashionado:

Have you always wanted to be on tv?

KG:

I really got into it after the fact (during my reign). Friends always tell me I should be on tv, maybe host a show, so I am looking into it now. There may be a real market for me in Korea, so we'll see.

fashionado:

Lets take some time and talk about your platform as Miss Georgia.

KG:

My platform is about eating disorders and its called

A Hunger for the Right Weigh: Eating Disorder Awareness and Prevention.

Yeah, it's a long title! The focus is about awareness and prevention through education.

Its because of a personal experience that I battled an eating disorder when I was younger. I was taller than most girls and kids were mean. If you are taller, smarter, different, kids can be very mean and the messages about self image can be very confusing. I didn't know where I fit in and I had low self-esteem. The straw that broke the camel's back was during middle school when a school "crush" found out I liked him. He didn't like me, so one day in between classes he came up to me and said, "Kimberly, I think you're ugly and fat." I was devastated. In my mind, I believed that if he thought I was ugly and fat, so must everybody else. From there started a downward spiral of bad body image and I stopped eating. I would lie to my parents about eating, and though I always thought about food, I couldn't eat. Eventually, I got extremely sick. I was having heart and liver problems. I went through a lot of therapy and tears. My family was initially in denial, "

how could this happen to our daughter

," but they got me the help I needed and through their love and support, I overcame. I can honestly say that I have been to the lowest of lows and now I am at my highest and happiest.

Self-worth is very important and my message to all girls is that they are worth much more than words.

You

are unique and beautiful as you are and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I have spent much of my year as Miss Georgia speaking to middle school boys and girls about positive self image, building self-esteem and the importance of going after your goals.

fashionado:

Thank you for sharing Kimberly. Your story and message are very significant on all levels.

Now, lets lighten up our talk  a bit.  Is it true that you can never where your crown in public after your year reign as Miss Georgia?

KG:

No! Obviously its in respect to the new queen. She won her crown and it's her year. Its her time to shine.

fashionado:

You get to keep the crown? And is it on display?

KG:

Oh yes, I get to keep it! Its in its box and there is a process to how I open the box. It is on display in my home. My room is very interesting to walk into, though it seems a bit narcissistic because all my accomplishments, trophies and crowns are on display. My parents tell me I've earned them and should be out for all to see.

fashionado:

When did you start doing pageants?

KG:

I was 15 years old and though the pageant and modeling worlds are a little taboo with eating disorders, pageants actually became a part of my healing process. I was in recovery at 15 and immediately made eating disorders my platform which required me to talk about it.

fashionado:

Are you finished with doing pageants?

KG:

Yes, I'm hanging up my high heels.

fashionado:

How do you feel placing in the top 15 in Miss USA?

KG:

The top 15 is a complete honor. I'm representing the state of Georgia and I know I went into that competition and did my best. I had an outstanding team with great people behind me who supported me and helped me get to where I was. It was a great experience which opened up so many doors. I am very proud and very thankful to all the people who helped me get this far.

fashionado:

Have you met

Donald Trump

?

KG:

I did. I did meet him, twice. Of course he's very busy. When we first met him, he came into the auditorium with his own theme music. But you know, that's him, that's his style, a little over the top. He walks in with all these security guards and says' "

helloooo

girls". I shook his hand and said "Hello Mr. Trump."

Another time I met him was after the pageant, I was a little incognito with family and friends. As he walked near me along with this entourage, he stops, comes over and says, " You're Miss Georgia, right?" I didn't even look like Miss Georgia at the time. He and his wife are a very nice couple.

fashionado:

So what's on your agenda now as the time has come to crown a new queen?

KG:

I need to finish up my semester at UGA this fall and then plan to go back overseas in 2010. I'm not sure where that will take me, but I also have L.A. and New York in mind. I want to pursue all avenues and keep my options open.

How about a Caribbean Cruise with Josh, Reva and Shayne Lewis!

The

Soap Cruise

sails on January 28, 2010.

Joshua Lewis/  Robert Newman speaks  about life during and after the Guiding Light:

fashionado:

I texted my sisters, both avid GL fans, to tell them I would be interviewing you and I asked them if there was anything specific I should ask. One them replied right away, "ask if he'll go out with me." (My sisters are married, by the way!) So, Robert, what's it like to be a heartthrob!

Robert:

It's a strange thing to hear. I think its Josh who's the heartthrob. He takes care of the people who he loves and he's a good dad. He really believes in true love and I think that draws women to him.

fashionado:

How do you stay looking so good and so young? Have you discovered the fountain of youth!

Robert: (modestly laughs and replies) Strong Norwegian genes. I eat and sleep well, I'm not fanatical about it, but I take care of myself. I also just started

Beth Chamberlin's

(Beth Spaulding) work out and fitness regiment, the

Kettlebell Way

. It really works.

fashionado:

Would you like to say anything to your fans?

Robert:

Some people are really struggling with

Guiding Light

gone. Fans have approached me, openly weeping. They've always expected GL to be there and now it's not. It's a pretty big deal. I want to say to all our fans, Thank you. Without your support there wouldn't have been a show.

fashionado:

I'm excited to hear about your play

Sessions

.

Robert:

Doing theater fills my soul. My dream was to do theater in New York which is why I moved there in the first place. I am playing the lead role in

Sessions

, Dr. Peter Peterson, a therapist on the brink of a mid-life crisis whose patients help him through this journey. It makes you question the value of therapy.

Sessions

is a terrific new piece, a musical. I was doing it in the last two and a half months of the GL which was a true challenge.

On stage, I feel completely and utterly at home.

Sessions

is playing through the end of the year at the

Uptown with Tina Sloan

After a successful launch in Atlanta of the wonderful one woman play,

Changing Shoes

,

Tina Sloan

, who originated the role of

Lillian Raines

on the

Guiding Light

26 years ago, is back at the place she calls home, New York City. I met up with Tina, on her turf, for a lovely lunch at the chic Amaranth restaurant.

Tina loved Atlanta and praised her audiences,

"They were wonderful and so gracious."

As much as she enjoyed the city, walks to the botanical gardens and the stellar service at the Four Seasons, Tina is happy to be back in

her

city and is taking a little time to rest.

At our NYC lunch, we talked about how much

we

miss the

Guiding Light

and we talked about how much we love Changing Shoes. I went to the play 5 times! Needless to say, I can now recite a number of lines, so I did. My favorite:

"You must always wear your own shoes, otherwise your feet won't know where to take you."

I followed Tina's advice the previous evening and wore one of my favorite pairs-- metallic silver wingtips. They took me to Dior, Gucci, and Yves Saint Laurent. You see, Changing Shoes is a play for everybody. Changing Shoes the book, hits bookstores in Fall 2010.

After lunch, which was quite delicious may I add, Tina invited me over to see her place.  As we approach her place, the doorman greeted us as he pulled the door open. We went through the posh lobby towards the elevator. Tina's home is as sophisticated as you would expect. Her impeccable decorating epitomized NYC chic.
