"The First Ever 2nd Annual Toecane Peeps Show"

Some Peeps took us to the disco while other peeps followed the "yellow brick road" and an adventurous, marshmallowey crew ventured to outer space - the new frontier- however, many other Peeps, well, they were just eaten. Judson Guerard Hot Glass Studio in North Carolina hosted "The First Ever 2nd Annual Toecane Peeps Show." The annual, deliciously sweet art show is the brainchild of glassblowers Judson and Sally Guerard and brought forth some of the most creative and clever artists from the area to create mini-installations featuring the iconic holiday treats. I was honored to judge the competition and perhaps a little sick - too many Peeps in my tummy! What happens when you take a group of talented, smart and socially aware artists and invite them to create art with something as ridiculous as marshmallow peeps? - A super amazing event! Enjoy the photos in the slideshow and perhaps next year you'll want to enter!

Art & Sole: Interview with Jane Gershon Weitzman

"Before long, I began to travel around the country looking for artists to make fantasy shoes for our store windows. This book, Art & Sole, is the result of many years of hard work and fun that went into creating those displays." Jane Gershon Weitzman

When your husband is a world famous shoe designer one might think that putting together a coffee table book about shoes is no big thing but for Jane Gershon Weitzman, wife of Stuart Weitzman, it was a labor of love. From the rich, red fabric cover to its gilded edges, Art & Sole represents a stunning collection of "fantasy shoes" and nearly two decades of passionately discovering, collecting and displaying these one-of-a-kind sculptures.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Jane about Art & Sole:

Talk about the selection process in curating Art & Sole. How did you narrow down from over one thousand fantasy shoes? “Some of my friends and I looked at the shoes, artist by artist and the best ones were obvious, because we almost always agreed.”

What does your husband think about the book? “Stuart loves the book and is my biggest booster.”

Art & Sole looks lovely on my coffee table. I love it. How & when did you conceptualize making such a book? “Thank you!  After we sold the business, people kept asking me what happened to the shoes. I thought doing a book would be a good way to help make some money for good causes.”

Which fantasy shoes are your favorites? And you can't say all of them! “After spending so much time with some of the artists, it really would be hard to choose favorites. It's sort of like choosing your favorite child. They are all great in different ways.”

Can you share any fun or interesting stories about the shoes? Or the artists? Challenges? “I wouldn't know where to begin, but if I speak in Atlanta again some day, I will make sure that you are invited as my guest. I never did find an artist to make glass shoes. The ones who were good enough never sent the shoes, even after I called them many times.”

Are there any plans for an Art & Sole traveling art exhibit? “Right now there are no plans for a traveling exhibit, but I hope that there will be one day.”

Who is more passionate about shoes? You or Stuart Weitzman? “I love shoes, but Stuart is definitely more passionate about them. He builds shoes from patterns and then decides the materials. Then, he has to make sure that they fit. His reward is seeing them on so many girls and women. When he has time, he stops them and introduces himself and whenever ladies recognize him, they stop him. He really loves what he does!”

Penland School Auction 2014

Penland School of Crafts
Penland School of Crafts

I snapped this photo leaving Penland. I never get tired of this view!

Happy Monday everyone! After a sensational weekend at the Penland School of Crafts in NC, I am back home in Atlanta and feeling a little tired. The gloomy weather isn't doing anything for my energy level either! Penland School celebrated its 29th Annual Benefit auction this past weekend with well over 400 of its loyal supporter, patrons, artists and volunteers. It is quite an impressive production and task pulling it off as fabulously as they do. [Not to date myself] but I was around for Penland's 3 & 4th Annual auctions - I was just a kid *wink. Congratulations to Penland for raising $600K+ to benefit its programming. That is truly amazing and wonderful. If you are an art lover and /or collector, the Penland School Annual Auction is a MUST!

The "signature" piece, a collaboration between artists Julia Woodman and Kenny Pieper sold for $35K!!! The sterling martini set and hand-blown glasses was absolutely exquisite. Watch the making of the signature piece in this video:

Look at this view! I borrowed the image from Penland School's IG. I'm heading that way today and I am so excited. It has been well over a decade since I have attended the Penland School of Crafts Annual Benefit Auction. The auction is truly an experience like nothing else. Starts Friday with luncheons, gallery shows, previews, cocktails, dinner followed by more art on Saturday and the auction itself under the big white tent. Best way to describe the next two days: over-the-top!

I'll Instagram throughout the weekend so make sure you're following me @fashionado!

Get to know Penland School through this feature we filmed last Fall.
