Hereafter

Hereafter
Director: Clint Eastwood
Starring: Matt Damon, Cecil De France, Frankie and George McLaren, and Bryce Dallas Howard

In the last ten years, Oscar winner Clint Eastwood has directed: Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Flags of Our Fathers, Letters From Iwo Jima, Changeling, Gran Torino, and Invictus.  The term living legend is used frequently in Hollywood.  For Eastwood, that description barley does the man justice.  Hereafter is not his greatest cinematic achievement but it is still one of the best movies this year.  It is a solid addition to an already amazing body of work.

Eastwood presents three interconnected stories that deal with life after death. The movie opens with the beautiful Cecil De France (High Tension) on vacation in a scenic coastal village.  The tide suddenly rushes away from the shore and a truly horrifying tsunami sequence follows. Cecil is washed away in the surge of water and before she is revived she experiences a white light and images of people around her.  Upon returning to Paris, she is unable to move on with her life as a famous news anchor and is consumed with what she experienced.

2010 Fashionado Fall Film Preview

Friday, September 3rd, 2010
It has been unbearably hot and humid in Atlanta this summer.  But the hottest mess in town was brought to us by Hollywood and not mother nature.  Summer is without question Tinseltown’s money making season and plenty of money was made.  Unfortunately, quality was not on their agenda. Inception and Toy Story 3 were the only true stand outs.  More often than not it was one disappointment after another.  Iron Man 2 and Shrek 4 I am talking to you.

So this fall Hollywood will do its best to open up our wallets and pocket books, and they have close to 100 chances to do so.  As you busy yourself with Halloween costumes for the kids, readying your home for Thanksgiving guests, and shopping for Hanukkah and Christmas, take some time to be entertained. This is the season when studios put out their best Oscar bait, but I am no movie snob.  Here is a list of my top five films, Oscar worthy or not, that I know I will be checking out over the next few months.

FIVE
The Town
Director: Ben Affleck
Starring: Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm
Release Date: September 17th

This will be Oscar winner Ben Affleck’s second film behind the camera.  It is a crime based drama set in Boston. Affleck’s character is faced with the choice of leaving a life as a bank robber for his new girlfriend.  The one snag is that his new girlfriend happens to have been a hostage taken during one of his robberies.  Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) co-stars as Affleck’s partner in crime.  Jon Hamm (Mad Men) is the federal agent tracking them down. For anyone who saw Affleck’s directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone, he has a knack for creating a gritty crime drama.
