Last night, Frank and Tanya Ski welcomed hundreds of their closest friends to their lovely home. It was a who’s who of celebrities, civil rights leaders, socialites and family. The occasion was the Sixth Annual Celebrity Wine Tasting & Live Auction. From the endless flashing of cameras on the glitteratti, to the delectable filet mignon in the kitchen and the excitement of auctioning a real live horse, the night was filled with fun, love and generosity, all in the name of charity. The event benefitted the Frank Ski Kids Foundation.
Its Mission: The Frank Ski Kids Foundation embraces youth and their value by showing examples and providing hands-on opportunities to promote optimal growth, self-expression, ingenuity, achievement and learning vital to their ambitions. Through the efforts of the Foundation and the help of charitable contributors, observable differences in communities have been made. Our efforts to date have helped many children, but the needs of our children remain immense. We must continue with unfaltering determination and dedication.
My personal reflection: As a member of the host committee, I was honored to be a part of the evening. Everyone knew why they were at Frank’s. Smiles and happiness blanketed the home. And when you set aside the glamour, what was left was a very powerful common denominator: the passion and belief in the value of our youth. The tone set by Frank Ski.
My night through pictures:
There is a story behind this picture. Taken by Evelyn Mims on her phone, at an emotional moment. Frank and I discovered we are connected more than we knew as we both have Cuban mothers and we both grew up in Miami. Upon this discovery and learning I had just celebrated 39 years of coming from Cuba, Frank says, “stay right here, I have something for you and its going to make you cry.” He darted upstairs and ran back down with something hidden behind his back. With much enthusiasm and passion, a selfless act was about to be committed. Frank surprised me with a beautiful, colorful, coffee table book of photographic images of Cuba. A kind, thoughtful and genuine gesture. I was moved. Frank was excited about giving me his book. Once again, I had experienced an amazing moment with Frank Ski. ( The first, when he visited with my kids at Grady High.) I’ve seen a sides which makes this man so incredibly special. Frank’s behavior is consistent and honest. He may have a beautiful home and lots of nice things but he places his value on humanity which is what matters most in the end. Please, visit his Foundation website, Frank Ski Kids. Contribute to his very important mission. Remember, philanthropy can come by way of volunteerism. Make a difference in a child’s life!
