Frank Ski: An Amazing Event, Amazing Man

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Last night, Frank and Tanya Ski welcomed  hundreds of their closest friends to their lovely home. It was a who’s who of celebrities, civil rights leaders, socialites and family. The occasion was the Sixth Annual Celebrity Wine Tasting & Live Auction. From the endless flashing of cameras on the glitteratti, to the delectable filet mignon in the kitchen and the excitement of auctioning a real live horse, the night was filled with fun, love and generosity, all in the name of charity. The event benefitted the Frank Ski Kids Foundation.

Its Mission: The Frank Ski Kids Foundation embraces youth and their value by showing examples and providing hands-on opportunities to promote optimal growth, self-expression, ingenuity, achievement and learning vital to their ambitions. Through the efforts of the Foundation and the help of charitable contributors, observable differences in communities have been made. Our efforts to date have helped many children, but the needs of our children remain immense. We must continue with unfaltering determination and dedication.

My personal reflection: As a member of the host committee, I was honored to be a part of the evening. Everyone knew why they were at Frank’s. Smiles and happiness blanketed the home. And when you set aside the glamour,  what was left was a very powerful common denominator: the passion and belief in the value of our youth. The tone set by Frank Ski.

FRANK SKI. A truly magnificent human being!

There is a story behind this picture. Taken by Evelyn Mims on her phone, at an emotional moment. Frank and I discovered we are connected more than we knew as we both have Cuban mothers and we both grew up in Miami. Upon this discovery and learning I had just celebrated 39 years of coming from Cuba, Frank says, “stay right here, I have something for you and its going to make you cry.” He darted upstairs and ran back down with something hidden behind his back. With much enthusiasm and passion, a selfless act was about to be committed. Frank surprised me with a beautiful, colorful, coffee table book of photographic images of Cuba. A kind, thoughtful and genuine gesture. I was moved. Frank was excited about giving me his book. Once again, I had experienced an amazing moment with Frank Ski. ( The first, when he visited with my kids at Grady High.) I’ve seen a sides which makes this man so incredibly special. Frank’s behavior is consistent and honest. He may have a beautiful home and lots of nice things but he places his value on humanity which is what matters most in the end. Please, visit his Foundation website, Frank Ski Kids. Contribute to his very important mission. Remember, philanthropy can come by way of volunteerism. Make a difference in a child’s life!

Frank Ski – A Good Man on a Mission

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Frank Ski paid a visit to the UrbanCouture studio at Grady High School this week to meet his designer for Doggies on the Catwalk, 18 year old Jhari Ponder. Frank and his German Shepherd, Mena, are models in the event benefiting Pets Are Loving Support, PALS.

Needless to say, all my students know who Frank Ski is and they were very excited to meet him. Some were even a little nervous! Frank walked in, said hello and with a smile, everyone had relaxed. Here was this man with a tremendous amount of star power, who could have walked in with a tremendous attitude. Instead, the man we met was sweet, kind and humble. It became evidently clear to me why there is a Frank Ski Kids Foundation. Frank interacted with my students with love and respect. This is a man who gets “it”. He understands the value of youth and the significance of their contributions to society. He understands that “we” have a responsibility to guide, mentor and nurture our young people. Frank and his lovely wife, Tanya are “blessed with so much” in his words, “that sharing their blessings with others is very important.” They are both passionate about giving back to the community and providing young people a healthy, positive and cultural experience. The Frank Ski Kids Foundation is a grass roots organization that serves as a “vessel” for giving as your contributions are going directly to helping kids by funding for its programs. The children participating in these programs benefit greatly because of you. I wish you could have seen the gleam in Frank’s eyes while he spoke with me about his organization. Real, genuine feelings.

The Sixth Annual Celebrity Wine Tasting and Live Auction is taking place this Sunday and getting your ticket is the perfect way to get involved. Make a difference in style!
