The 39 Steps playing at the Theater in the Square in Marietta had me in the first few steps… Okay, the first few steps were wet, literally. The rain and parking challenges made me grumpy, to be honest… but the second the play started, I had forgotten the stress of getting to the theater and was hooked on The 39 Steps!
An adaptation from the 1915 book by John Buchan and the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film, the play engages its audience immediately through a combination of clever writing and precision acting. Its all in the delivery and this cast of very talented actors delivered, over and over: Jason MacDonald, Catherine Dyer, Bryan Mercer and Scott Warren.
The play’s simple premise sets the stage for a complex fast-paced web of hysterical situations that rippled from the lead’s [Jason MacDonald as Richard Hannay] wrongful murder accusation. MacDonald plays opposite his [real life] wife, Catherine Dyer, so their on-stage chemistry works convincingly well.
Bryan Mercer and Scott Warren round off an amazing cast. Major kudos to the director, Clint Thornton for a great job of keeping all of it together, funny and engaging.
The 39 Steps has been extended through February 27th! Don’t miss this play. The performances are excellent, the writing is witty, the lighting and special effects are creatively fantastic. Oh, and what are The 39 Steps? You’ll have to watch the play to find out! You’ll die laughing.
